You only need the Gold subscription to play online games with other players, to play the "Story" mode and offline modes in games you don't need the Gold subscription.

When you look at a game on the store , if you scroll down it will say if xbox live is needed .

Have you signed up for Microsoft rewards , it takes a wee bit of time but that could pay for your subscription 👍

If you play only single player games you don´t need any subscription. If you want to Play online you always need Xbox live Gold.

Hi, the Live Gold subscription is needed in order to play multiplayer online in games, there is not a filter for games inside the store (xbox_store) without
this feature, but you have a filter for "single player" games. All the games with a single player campaign can be played withoud gold, but if they have also a multiplayer mode you cannot play it without gold.

In some case you will need an active internet connection to play also in single player, but the gold subscription is not needed in these cases.

When you see "gold" near the price it is related to the fact that with an active gold subscription you have some additional offers / discounts on some games, moreover with gold you receive 4 games (2 for xbox one and 2 retrocompatible from the xbox 360)
for free that can be played until you have an active subscription.

Rocket league for example has a single player mode but is very limited and the core of the game is the online multiplayer... if you want to not make any mistake I suggest you to read the description of the game in the store where is stated the core of the
game. In the case of rocket league you find this:

When you see online/casual/competivie multiplayer you need Live Gold, when you see offline you can play it without gold

Gold is needed to play multi-player games, but it is not needed to actually download the games themselves. The games that don't require gold are very few and far between. Like my colleagues have mentioned already there is no filter in the store to find
those games. The listings in the store used to say if you required gold or not, but that seems now to have vanished.
