    Xbox One-s Controller Volume Greyed Out


    I bought a new Xbox One S for my son for Christmas, he recently got an online game and wanted to use voice chat so I bought him a headset with mic. When I plug the headset in to the controller there is no sound and the mic does not work.

    The mic icon on the top right of the screen is crossed out. When I look in settings -> controller the option to adjust the volume is greyed out (with or without the headset plugged in) and there is no option to adjust the mic.

    I have tried the headset on my Xbox and it works fine. I suspect the problem is with the controller, but Microsoft's only solution is to return either the controller or the whole xbox to the store for a replacement; neither of which my son wants to do as
    it means he'll either be without a controller or lose everything on his profile...

    Any suggestions short of buying another controller?

    If you're having trouble using the mic in chat please try these steps to see if one of them helps.

    1. Mute then unmute other people in your party
    2. Have other people in the party mute than unmute you
    3. Power cycle the console by holding the power button on it for 10 seconds till it shuts down.
    4. Delete your gamertag, powercycle the console again then redownload your gamertag

    Hi, Did you find a solution? I am having the same issue, since around early January 2019. The headset works perfectly fine on all other devices, and the volume option is greyed out in settings. I've tried several times to fix it with no success.

    Get a usb cable and plug the controller into the Xbox and go to settings Kinect and Devices and go to Devices and accessory

    Select the controller and make sure its doesn't have any pending updates for the controller.

    If you just brought the Xbox, you can send it into Xbox to get serviced. By going to account.microsoft.com > Devices and registering the device

    What type of headset is it by chance? Some headsets require their own firmware downloads and updates directly from there main website, Also have you checked your son's online safety and privacy settings? They may need to be adjusted.
