Xbox One S and External Drive - Some folders show as Empty (even though they have files in...

I'm trying to resolve a rather bizarre issue. I have an external drive (an 8TB MyBook) plugged into my Xbox One S via a USB port. There are two sub-folders in particular, Season for a TV show, that are full when I view them on my PC, but when I view them
on my Xbox One S they are empty. The file structure is as follows:

Drive > Shows > TV Show > Season

This same TV Show folder has multiple Seasons (11 in fact), all with Episode MKV files inside of them. Again, I can see them when viewing on my PC, but when I plug into my Xbox One S, two of these Season folders are empty. The rest are perfectly fine.

All files were created at the same time using MakeMKV, which has no settings that you can change so all files (save the actual contents) use the same Audio/Video settings and encoding.

I have verified this issue by checking these folders on both Kodi and using File Manager on the Xbox One S, and again on my PC using File Explorer. The external drive is brand new and when I plug it into my PC I don't get any warnings about corrupt files
    or anything like that.

I'm stumped. I could really use some advice on how to troubleshoot this further. I saw an earlier post about someone having similar issues, and the reply was to try using SFC to fix the issue, but this is an external drive and NOT a System Drive, something
that SFC doesn't seem to cater for.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    :)

Thanks for the reply but I don't think that is the cause of the issue as all the media files in question are xbox compatible format (using VLC player) and all folder file names are not that long.

If I copy the video folder from the USB drive (4tb) that i'm having the issue with to another ntfs USB drive (2Tb) then the console finds and plays the media fine.

So my current theory is that the console may have an issue with large USB drives (over 3 tb) that are attached as media drives and that contain large amounts of files (1,400+ folders, 5,000+ files)

I have not verified that there may be other files not showing up other than the ones I have noticed.

I'd love to be able to run a tool on the xbox to do a file folder count.

Another aspect to my story is that the USB drive i'm having issues with is a hardware raid device with mirroring enabled.

I'm not sure this fact has significance as it attaches fine to any PC.

    The mystery continues.

    Thanks for listening.

Sorry to hear it. Some video files are unable to be read properly by the console. If they are not showing then you may need to re-add them under a different video format. If the content is in a separate folder on the stick and cannot be seen by the
console while in that folder then that means the root menu for the file is too long

    Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately, no, this is not an issue with file format compatibility. As you can see in my original post, I am dealing with specifically MKV files (.mkv), files which
are on this same list you linked to. As mentioned, as well, I have multiple files that
are not found by my Xbox even though they are there, and they work on my PC.

This is an issue with the Xbox literally saying that there are no files in the folder, even though there are. This is
only for two folders on an external USB 3.0 drive and there are literally
several dozen more folders whose files show up. Those files that I can find are either .mp4 or .mkv, both file formats which are on the list you mentioned.

As you can see above, as part of ThorX360's fantastic advice, I was able to confirm the following:

    1. That the files are there on my PC.

    2. That they work on my PC.

    3. That moving the folder using my PC does not change anything; The files in the new folders also do not show up on my Xbox.

    4. Moving a single file from one of these folders to the Root Drive Directory
    does
cause the file to be visible on the Xbox, but the file will not play on the Xbox.

Again, this is not an issue with file compatibility.
This is about files simply not showing up in the File Manager or being recognized by the Xbox as even existing, never mind being accessible to play.

When you plug the Hard Drive in PC the windows 10 show all files for you?

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I hadn't tried that yet but I was busy moving the entire directories into the TV Shows folder when you asked, so I tried both.

When I view the root directory, I can see the file. It does NOT, however, play in either VLC or Kodi.

When I view the newly moved directories (copied, actually, so I still have the originals as a reference), they still show up as blank.

I'm curious if this might be a case of some corrupt files, but normally you wouldn't have this inconsistency between whether you saw them or not, only whether or not you could use/play them. They're all newly created, too, which makes this more odd.

Anything else you might suggest I try? (I'm thinking of re-ripping the files again to see if that resolves the issue.)
This is because xbox formated drives cannot be used as media drives

You must retain fat32 for.media use

You can move them.after using file.manager again not rrally recommended since the game drives are meant for game functions and core.xbox functions NOT media use

This isnt recommended to have two partitions on the same drive

    Seperate.drives is a better way

    Xbox recognizes.the primary partition

    But not secondary

This isnt a computer you arr dealing with

Xbox formated drives arent meant to be read by pcs due to the security measures keeps people.from cheating

You can only use either or mixed media etc

You can use file.manager to move from.media drives to game drive but keep.in mind you can only use so much as xbox must keep space for performance and game functions

Thank you for your reply, but I'm sorry: I don't follow your response at all. It seems like you have misunderstood my original post, or that you are making assumptions that are not correct. To clarify, this is
not an Xbox-formatted drive, this is a MyBook, PC-formatted for 8TB in a single partition.

I've never had an issue with the drive, or with my other 2TB PC-formatted drive, and all other files are present and accounted for, meaning I can see and read them, and I can also write to the drive and manage it, both from the Xbox
    and my PC.

On the Xbox it's literally only these two folders and their files, files which are present and do work on my PC. All my game file and apps are still on the internal XBox hard drive, so those are unaffected. (I apologize for not making this
clearer earlier.) This is strictly for media, and was purchased as I've seen multiple reports of this drive being effective. With this exception, it is.

Now, coming back to formatting, I struggle to see the correlation. Surely the whole thing wouldn't be recognized if it was incorrectly formatted and, if it were a formatting issue, I would have issue with ALL of the files, not just two folders worth with
    roughly 18 files each.

    So, to reiterate:

    1. The drive is an external 8TB Drive for Media files only

    2. All files can be viewed except for those in these two folders.

    3. All other episode files from other seasons of this same show can be seen and played.

    4. I can transfer the same files to the Root Directory using my PC, and they are then visible to from the Xbox.

    5. Even then I cannot play them, even though I can do this on my PC.

Again, I appreciate your response. I just don't believe you and I are discussing the same thing. Maybe this response will help clarify some things, but if you have any more questions about the setup, and what I'm doing, feel free to ask.
