  2. Hey all,

From the research I've been looking at, these projectors don't appear to be using Native 4k over HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0a It looks like the projector will accept a 4k Signal, but then downscale it to 1080p. This looks like the reason for it not working properly
for you on the Epson 5040ub, EH-TW7300 and 6040ub.

We'd recommend reaching out to Epson for further clarification on if the Projector displays in True 4K while using HDR.

If it doesn't, than this would be the reason that 4K Blu-ray UHD discs are not playing at a 4K resolution and only at 1080p.

  3. From my extensive reading, it appears as though the Epson won't accept a higher bandwidth signal than 10.2Gbps as a limitation of the HDMI chipset. It looks like the max accepted by the projector is 4k60 @ 4:2:0 / 8-bit (non-HDR). Attempting to send it
4k60 @ 4:4:4 results in the signal getting downgraded to 4:2:0 and color downgraded to 8-bit which is non-HDR.

Anything in yellow below is not supported by the Epson. Credit for the table goes to Acoustic Frontiers LLC.

This limitation also goes with the 6040UB since it's the same projector. A real kick in the nuts from Epson and pretty misleading. Especially when you watch their YouTube video where they say that it supports HDR from all devices.

With that said, apparently the 5040UBe / 6040UBe will accept HDR from a PS4Pro through the wireless add-on. There haven't been reports of anyone getting the Xbox One S to work yet....At least none that I have found.

To receive hdr on the epson 5040 navigate on the Xbox one s to settings>>>display and sound>>>video output>>>advanced video settings>>>and select the item "allow YCC 4:2:2" which should place a check in the block. This enables the proper chroma sub sampling
that enables hdr on the epson 5040. If you do not have this option you must update your Xbox one s to the latest version which is 10.0.15063.1003 which was released on 3/21/17. It works only with 4K blu ray and not through apps such as Vudu, Netflix and Amazon

Has anyone verified that this works? I am considering purchasing the epson 5040 or 6040 but cannot until I know this HDR issue is resolved as the last message by MasterChiefLgod seems to indicate.

    Thanks in advance!

Has anyone had success with HDR gaming on the 5040? There are only a few games out there that have HDR (Like Gears of War 4), but I'm sure more are coming.

I have exactly the same issue , cannot display HDR in 10 bit , but am able to have HDR in movies.I changed cables and nothing worked, the cable that I have is the wire world starlight 6 ( 1.4 ) but even changing to 2.0 made no difference. Seems to be a
xbox one s issue. I have recently installed a oppo UDP 203 4 K PLAYER and now I can get the full range 12 bit ,,, up to 4:4:4 and no matter what I throw at the projector it just works so well.

I thought the xbox 4 k player was ok , until I played the same movie on the oppo , now the xbox one s looks like a dvd player in comparison.

I would like the games to work in HDR ( forza 3 ) but I hope that xbox will release a update that will work.

So the projector is not to blame and neither HDMI CABELS ( 1.4 ),,,,,, some work is needed from Microsoft!!!

Can't agree enough. I've wasted so much time with swapping out hdmi cables and problem solving the issue. I have premium hdmi cables certified to carry the correct max bandwidth and still get issues so I think it's an Xbox one s problem. it is limiting the
ability to experience hdr in games with this PJ which is very disappointing.

I have the Epson tw9300 (overseas equivalent of the 5040ub/6040ub) and can only ever get hdr on uhd blurays. Trying to set 10bit and hdr (even with ycc 4:2:2) results in constant hdmi connection/disconnections cycles and black screens. Don't get any hdr
experience on apps like Netflix either (i have to turn off the 50hz and 24hz options to stop the constant drop outs)

Please look into this Microsoft (and Epson) as there are so many lengthy threads related to the issue on avsforums, avforums, xbox forums etc...

    Thanks

The reason is because the xbox one s hdmi chipset outputs a signal of 18gbps, where as the epson is only able to receive a 10.2 gbps signal. The rest is basically cut off, which is why it wont work. Its like trying to fit an apple into a water bottle.

Having the same issue, Epson 5040ub w/ Xbox One S, HDR isn't working on anything (UHD, Netflix, games) despite receiver and all cables being HDMI 2.0a / 4K HDR supported spec.
