Xbox One S - 1st gen controller - Headset/adapter not working

Hello,

I recently received a second hand adaptor so that I can plug in my headphones/headset into my controller and listen to audio/communicate this way. However, when I try to use it the xbox shows as if a headset is plugged in (icon in top right of headset) and
I can see it in the accessories section as having a xbox headset plugged into the controller but when I try to go into the audio menu (normally below the settings menu option on xbox guide) the option doesnt appear in the list. There is also no option to switch
over to headset audio within the audio section of the settings (where you can change in game chat etc.).

I have tried updating the controller (and console is updated) which didnt work. I also tried one of my friends newer controllers with the same headset and for this the missing audio menu appeared and I could set this up fine. This made me think that it is
an issue with the controller or adapter but its weird that the xbox does register that I am plugging the adapter in by showing that I have connected a headset, the mute button illuminates when I press it and when I adjust the volumes on the adapter I am getting
the beeping in my headphones showing there is some sort of connection.

I'm therefore confused as to whether or not its a hardware issue, software issue or something I am missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Which adaptor do you have? The official Xbox adaptor, or the Turtle Beach adaptor?

Both work in a similar way, but control slightly differently. Both of them work via the physical buttons, the headset audio menu only opens if you plug a headset directly into one of the Xbox One controllers with a 3.5mm audio port.

when using an adaptor the sounds are controlled via the adaptor, best way is to press the chat side all the way so you hear no game sound and only chat then press the game sound side to get the required game volume, i always start with the chat all the
way up as its the easiest way to find the right in between volume level that i need.

Hi Young Wu,

To answer your question, yes the stereo headset adapter can be used on the 1st generation Xbox One controller. The headset adapter can be used for pretty much any Xbox One controller because the port is located at the bottom of every controller.

The first generation controllers don't have the 3.5 mm port for audio jacks so only headsets with the adapter can be used for those controllers.
