My TV only outputs at either 720p or 1080i, however my xbox one allows me to output it at 1080p... I am aware that it isn't compatible with 1080i so I am confused. Anyone know why my xbox allows me to output at a resolution that me TV wont?

    :)

If things are running and you can play your games then I'd be happy with that buddy.

I can't run games at 1080p because my television automatically upscales the image to a higher resolution.

Things still look pretty good though.

  5. Yeah haha, its not a question of being unhappy (as the resolution couldn't be much better) more a question of why it is being shown at 1080p when the TV itself can't - weird.

I'm told the XBox ONE doesn't do 1080i.

So what might be happening is your TV is displaying at 720p but the ONE is upscalling the image?

    Xbox one resolution

If you switch your TV connection settings in the Xbox One settings from "Auto-detect" to HDMI or DVI it will display the only resolutions the Xbox One is capable of even if your TV doesn't support some of those resolutions. You can set it to 1080p, but
if your TV doesn't support it the screen will go black. If you set it to 1080p and your screen didn't go black then your TV accepts 1080p, but your TV might scale it to 720p.

Unfortunately, many TVs don't accept either 1080p or 720p, so without 1080i output the Xbox One is forced into standard definition 640x480, which by Microsoft's own admission is not recommended. 640x480 resolution on a system meant to display in HD looks
terrible and it makes the Xbox One look worse than the Xbox 360. Many of the Xbox One's main features do not even work in 640x480 like the big app tile goes to a black screen and when snapping apps the left screen goes black. Not to mention that any on-screen
text is illegible and the system is letterboxed even on a widescreen TV because 640x480 is a 4:3 resolution.

Microsoft could easily fix this by adding 1080i output in an update, but they have been ignoring this, even though it is one of the biggest requests on their new feedback site.

If it's that easy why not just code it and send it to them.

They might even give you a free game.

Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and WiiU can all output 1080i with no problems at all. Any cable set-top box outputs 1080i and usually it is the default output. It is not that difficult for an HD device to output 1080i.

They added 3D Blu-ray support and Dolby Digital to the Xbox One, so yes Microsoft is quite capable of adding features that were promised at launch. The hardware scaler is capable of 1080i, they're just not allowing 1080i output for some reason. They already implied that
they could add it, but they don't want to. So yes it is easy.

And all that's besides the point anyway. Before they start adding features that aren't necessary, they should be working to fix something that was promised at launch and is causing major issues with the proper functioning of many Xbox Ones.

  11. My TV must either be capable of 1080p - which I was unaware of, or it might be scaling down to 720p. There isn't much of a difference between the 720 and the 1080p settings, aside from more 'jaggies' on the higher resolution. that said, gameplay quality
is slightly sharper on 1080p so yeah.

Most TV's will take a range of inputs and scale them to suit the actual resolution of the panel. I have a cheap 17" bush TV bought from argos 5 years ago that will take 720p/1080i and 1080p inputs (as well as many analogue inputs)

I'd guess the actual panel display res is 1366x768 - so almost, but not quite, native 720p.

Just because my TV will take a 1080p input it's not going to magically grow extra pixels on the screen, but it will display a full screen image as best it can.

As for the difference between 720p, 1080p and 1080i -

1080 has just over 2 megapixels.

720 has just under 1 megapixels.

p = progressive. Which means all of the lines in the image get changed with each frame.

i = interlaced. Which only every other line in the image update each frame.

So a 720p moving image and a 1080i moving image contain about the same amount of data.

A progressive (p) image looks smoother when moving, makes no difference to a static image.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Oh and a 4K image would be a 2160p picture with about 8.3 megapixels.

    Xbox one resolution

The part about 720p and 1080i containing the same amount of data isn't true. Interlaced just sends the data to the TV in 2 separate fields. The fields are combined to form a complete frame. How the TV does this is different for each type of display, but
the result is the same in that a complete frame of 1080 lines is shown on the screen. So 1080i displays the same number of pixels as 1080p.

The only problem with interlaced is that if a fixed pixel display does the deinterlacing poorly there can be a "combing" effect, which basically looks like a few lines slightly out of place during fast motion (happens quickly and is not that noticeable to
most people) or what Microsoft refers to as a "slight blur" and that is their entire justification for not including 1080i output.

1080i is still a higher resolution than 720p and many people prefer the higher resolution of 1080i over 720p, because their TV might handle interlace content better than other TVs and they might not even notice the combing or "slight blur".

How is the data part not correct? The image on the screen contains twice as much data, but it's only being fully refreshed half as often. The amout of data per second to make the moving image is approximately the same. More detail verses smoother movement.
    Personal preference in the end.

As you say, for a static image 1080i and 1080p are the same, but for moving images the TV has to do some tricks to de-interlace the image or you get a comb effect.

I was just pointing out that the input into the TV and the picture on the screen are not the same thing.

A 1366x768 panel hasn't physically got 1080 lines, but the TV may still display a 1080i or 1080p signal input.

It's personal preference to which you prefer to look at.

I thought you were trying to imply that 1080i is only half the resolution of 1080p. That's why I said it wasn't true. Just wanted to point out that 1080i does display a full frame of 1080 lines of pixels just as 1080p does.

At least you can agree that its personal preference and that some people might prefer 1080i over 720p... if only Microsoft could understand this point...
