Xbox One, PSU noise. What is normal?

There has been a lot of discussion about the PSU noise, but it is still unclear to me that what kind of noise falls in to "normalr" category?

My PSU makes a noise which is pretty easy to hear.

If there is no background noise, i can hear it easily from several meters distance. The noise itself comes from the fan i think. Sounds kind of like the fan makes a "clicking sound". I don't know if that is the correct word for it, but that's the best i
can describe it

It has been like that from day one. The PSU works fine, but the noise is a bit annoying and because of it i usually don't want to use the instant on feature (which i probably would use otherwise).

my xbox one is 2 month's old and i'm having a blast with it, the only thing that bothers me is that the PSU is making quite some noise when in "instant on" mode it's a feature i would love to use, but i can't because of the noise. i would love to get a replacement
PSU but i read a lot of stories that you have to get lucky to get a quiet one.

what's the best way to get a quiet PSU?

 

I just get a low pitched hum. Pretty quiet. Cant hear it over anything on screen

 

On my first Xbox One (imported from Amazon.de) there was a slight low piched hum/"smooth" fan noise Notisable but not directly anoying in a quiet room (Instant On mode)... Had been that way since I got it. but I could not hear it With the tv/surround system
on.. As I had a pre-order for the Scandinavian day one I sold it to a cousin of mine when my pre-order arrived..

On my Scandinavian/Norwegian Day one console I can't hear anything from the from the PSU even when the room is completely quiet.. the first Xbox one is still going strong at my cousins house so from my experience there can be slight diffrences in the noise
Levels of xbox one PSUs... but as said the noise from my first XB Ones psu was smooth in nature and I could not hear any clicking..

So far it seems that the noise on my PSU is not normal, might need to think about replacing it at some point.

 

I think its fair to say that you may have an issue. However earlier components may have differences in the way that they run. By which I mean that the Xbox I now have sitting below my TV is a replacement for my day one model which died. That particular console
was much louder when running. I had to send it for an advanced replacement. The reason it failed was not down to the PSU or fans however.

 

My console was purchased in March, so it is not day one, but it is soon celebrating it's 1 year birthday.

Like said, the PSU has made that noise since day one and so far it has worked otherwise without problems. So, to the main problem is that the noise is annoying and it might be a sign of a problem to come, but who knows.

I know that lots of people have some kind of noise from the PSU, but based on what i have read, the noise mine makes is not what many people are experiencing. To me it sounds like the fan bearings could be bad or something like that.

Other issue i had with the console is that the Kinect sensor completely died, did not turn on at all. I tried all the troubleshooting guides without success. So, it was sent for repairs and it is actually now on it's way back.

My Xbox 360 was also being repaired , should come back on monday. After i get it back, i will consider about sending the Xbox One PSU for repairing, then i will at least have the 360 to play with while i wait for replacement PSU for One.

 

My Day One console had a noisy PSU, straight out of the box.

It was very noticeable when on the dashboard, and also when in quiet parts of games or videos.

It annoyed me a lot, until I finally ordered a replacement from
https://myservice.xbox.com/ maybe a year ago or so.

Back then, you could either send your PSU off (at your own expense) and wait for a replacement to be sent back to you, or just pay for one to be sent straight out. I paid for one, so that I wouldn't be without for weeks, and also so I wouldn't have to pay
the postage to send my PSU from the UK to Prague.

The option to just pay for one appears to have vanished - now the only option is to send your current one away (at your own expense) and wait for a replacement.

 

(I'm just assuming it's still at your own expense to ship it back)

 

It seems that Microsoft's accessory return policy has changed!

(or they've *** up)

I've just put through my own PSU replacement order, as I'm fed up with the noise from my replacement PSU, and instead of telling me I have to ship it to Prague at my own expense, I have instead been emailed a link for a pre-paid UPS Returns label for shipping
it to Germany

 

I think the PSU humming/buzzing noise, overall, is normal. How loud it is unfortunately just depends on a brick by brick basis. The PSU chassis quality is horrible and ultimately to blame. I have found that if you apply pressure to the brick casing, in the
right spot, that it pretty much eradicates the humming, this leads me to believe that it is a vibration issue exacerbated by cheap housing. I have had 2 bricks so far and both have been the same.

Currently, I have another replacement coming from Microsoft, for free. I merely chatted online with customer support and they offered to send a new brick without any qualms. Maybe this is there new policy?

For the moment, I use a cork and rubber band to exert pressure at an exact point on the top of the housing to alleviate buzzing/humming/vibration noise.

It's ridiculous, but I don't expect anything less from Microsoft.
