    Does anyone know if the Xbox One will allow portable external hard drives which only gets powered by the Xbox itself instead of a power adapter?

    Yes, the drive will draw the power from the USB connection when Microsoft enable the support for external hard drives during next months update.

    It depend on the HDD. So you must read the HDD makers intructions manaul.

    As long as it is USB 3.0 and at least 256GB it will work whether it is powered by an AC Adapter or straight from USB.

    Your HDD needs to be at least 256GB and USB 3.0. The Power Consumption will rely on the HDD its self. Check the Manual. If you have a AC Apdater with it then most likely it will use the AC Adapter if its plugged in.

    I got the 3TB version and this is what I Replying to all the Hard Drive question here as this needs to be fixed Please

    I got a WD MyBook and I like it, but it doesn't shut down like it does with a computer

    I say Xbox needs to make the Xbox One power off USB when you turn the One off

    Please fix this issue Xbox

    Back up external hard drive - Desktop or portable?

    Desktop external hard drives tend to be faster since they have their own power supply and I find its cheaper (gb per $ wise) to go with a desktop hard drive then a portable one.

    I know WD makes an external portable hard drive designed specifically for consoles like the Xbox One. I would maybe check that one out if you want to go portable.

    Hi Jiza1981, you can generally buy cheap cables over eBay.

    Kotaku did a great post some time ago regarding drives that will work seamlessly with the Xbox One. I've yet to get a hard drive for my Xbox One but I'm almost out of room (Microsoft just love giving me games! :) ) so it's time to get one I think!

    Anyway, without linking anyone to anything external to this website, Kotaku recommended the following external hard drives;

    1TB HGST Touro S 7200rpm Portable External Hard Drive

    WD My Passport 1TB Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 Black

    WD My Book 4 TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive with Backup

    I've never used that Touro brand so I can't comment on them but I've had good experiences with Western Digital and their external hard drive range. Nice and sturdy units!
