Xbox One - PLEX - Cant upscale Stereo to 5.1 in movies and Xbox tells reciever that it sends ...

    Hello,

    My setup is the following:

XBOX One - [HDMI] - Reciever (Yamaha RX-V775) - [HDMI] PROJECTOR. I have set up Xbox one to send sound 5.1 uncompressed.

When using Xbox One PLEX to watch movies that has 5.1-sound encoded it works perfectly.
However, when i watch movies with AAC Stereo sound, PLEX/Xbox will not upscale it to 5.1 but as I understand it, Xbox will still send 5.1-signals to the reciever (but only with stereo-information) which causes
the reciever to interpret the data as full 5.1 but only the stereo speakers will produce sound while the others are quiet.

As the reciever interprets it as it recieves full 5.1-data it is not possible to use Dolby Logic Pro etc. on the reciever to improve the sound.

The only alternative as I see it now, is that I must manually enter Xbox One settings and change the sound output from 5.1 uncompressed to stereo every time I watch a movie with Stereo-audio only in order for the reciever to be able to correctly upscale
    the sound?

This is a very arguous task which is not viable and In that case I rather use Plex on for instance a Chromecast, but I would like to use the Xbox as a my full media solution.

Does anyone have any ideas to solve this without having to manually change the sound-settings in Xbox everytime I am to watch a movie? (And I dont want to leave it at Stereo as many of my movies has 5.1 which is better than an upscaled stereoversion).

    Thankful for input and recommendations!

    BR

Media Player/USB movies do not play in 5.1 surround through A/V system

5.1 films should be outputting as 5.1 if all your games are etc. The problem is normally when your film is only 2.0 and you would expect the amp to upscale it to use 5.1. The most noticeable thing is the centre speaker not being used. I WISH they'd sort
this out. They need to make the xbox either:

    a) only send out 2.0 stereo sound when the media is only stereo or

    b) have the Xbox upscale the original stereo source to your chosen number channels (speakers).

I would suggest that your media on the USB stick may only just be stereo and that's why you're getting the output you are. The "fix" for this is to set the sound output in your xbox settings to just stereo (you can change it back after the film). This
will allow the amp to actually receive just a stereo signal and upscale to use all your speakers as you want. The PS4 works the same way. Bit of a backwards step from the older PS3 that changed output based on the source. Not everything is progress...

Audio distorted through optical on Dolby 5.1

I have a Xbox 360 S, a proscan 40" flat screen, and an RCA RTD615i 5.1 surround sound. I have my Xbox connected to my tv through hdmi and an optical cable connected to the surround sound reciever. My problem is that when the digital audio settings for
the Xbox are set to digital stereo it plays normal. When I change it to Dolby digital 5.1 my sound goes nuts with distorted sound. I would really enjoy having 5.1 surround sound. I'm not sure if the digital stereo option in the Xbox along with 5.1 set on the
reciever will play 5.1 anyway or not, because I really cannot tell if it's surround sound or if its just playing the same thing through all speakers. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Xbox One - PLEX - Cant upscale Stereo to 5.1 in movies and Xbox tells reciever that it sends ...

I had this same problem. I have an older receiver (Harmon/Kardon AVR147) that only takes optical in for digital audio, and before I got my Xbox One I had bought an HDMI switch with optical out (about $40 on Amazon) to strip the audio out of an HDMI input
to go into the receiver. Here's the one I got:

    www.amazon.com/.../B00H7KG0VY

When I got the Xbox, I didn't need this anymore since everything was going to run through it. I connected the Xbox directly to the receiver via the optical out, and HDMI to my tv. Under settings, I had "Optical audio" set to "Bitstream." With that setup,
I had the exact problem you're having with Plex movies in stereo - my receiver was only recognizing the Dolby Digital stream and wouldn't use Dolby Pro Logic II (or anything else) to convert to 5.1, giving me just stereo output using the right and left speakers
    only.

With the switch I linked above, that problem is gone. I now have the Xbox connected via HDMI only to the switch, and the switch has HDMI running to the tv and optical out running to the receiver. Under settings, I have "HDMI audio" set to "5.1 uncompressed",
and "Optical audio" set to "Off" (since there's no optical cable running from the Xbox anymore, only HDMI). With this setup, my receiver is once again able to use Dolby Pro Logic II to convert Plex movies with stereo tracks to 5.1. I haven't tested it with
running just an HDMI to the receiver from the switch, but my guess is it would work that way too.

Hope this helps you solve your problem.

What to do with the TOSLINK port

Right now the xbox one output optical TOSLINK 5.1 threw DTS surround. DTS is actually better then Dolby 5.1 but some audio equipment doesnt have support for DTS, dolby toslink support is set to come next year, but right now 5.1 with toslink is possible
(ive been using it) but only if your recieved supports DTS. Best option you have now is to set the toslink optical to stereo, and then use your dvd player to put it into Dolby Pro Logic II mode. This mode a simulated 5.1 that takes a stereo signal and makes
it a kinda fakish 5.1 while not true 5.1 is will be better then just 2.0 stereo till dolby is patched in.
