Xbox One plays games but not Dvds.

I have the same problem with DVD playback, however, it's only on DVDs recorded on a toshiba DVD recorder. Bought DVDs play in the correct aspect ratio on Xbox one, but recorded DVDs play in 4:3. However, on every other DVD player, they play in widescreen.
On Xbox 360 I can adjust the aspect ratio in settings. I cannot find how to do this on the Xbox one.

Check if your Xbox One can play standard DVD movie discs (Not Blu-ray discs). Xbox 360 game discs use DVD disc media. If your console can not read DVD discs, then it has a hardware fault.

I tried playing a regular DVD in my Xbox, but it doesn't do anything. Only discs for Xbox One work at the moment. Is there a fix for that?

Verify that your consoles drive is functioning. Try playing a DVD movie disc, not a Blu-ray disc.

If your console will not play DVD then the drive has hardware fault.

There are two lasers in the blu-ray drive. One for reading DVD and Xbox 360 games and another for Xbox One and Blu-ray discs.

Xbox One will be able to play DVD's. DVD + Bluray + TV watching + Xbox Live + Apps + Gaming = All in One entertainment system = Xbox One. All in One entertainment system is what M placed emphasis on @ Xbox Reveal & E3. M doesn't just cater to just us younger
generation but to older people too (who may enjoy watching DVDs and want to play it on a Full HDTV rather than a 1333x768 resolution PC. The popular Xbox 360 uses a DVD drive.

Can you confirm if your console can read DVD discs?

Xbox 360 games are on DVD and Xbox One games are on Blu-Ray. The Xbox One's Blu-ray drive has a separate laser to read DVD's, if it has malfunctioned, Xbox 360 games can't be read and the digital download for BC games won't start.

To test this out, try playing a DVD movie disc. In all likelihood these films won't play and that will confirm drive malfunction. If this is the case you'll need your console repaired/replaced.
