Xbox One Online Games not playing

Last week we switched to a different broadband provider. On the same day we realised that my son's Xbox One can no longer play games online with his friends (Fortnite, Minecraft, GTA etc). He's in the middle of his A levels and online gaming with his friends is his way to relax... instead all his head is filled with is how on earth can he get back to online gaming!

So he's spoken to Xbox and the ISP tech support and been taken through numerous resets/power washes etc but to no avail. The Xbox does connect to the internet with a good connection, but he gets an error message saying he can't connect to Fortnite servers etc when trying to play online. He moved the Xbox downstairs and connected via an LAN cable and this seemed to fix the problem. However we never needed an Ethernet connection before and we don't really want to have to shell out to get someone to do this, just because we changed broadband provider. Can anyone suggest something that we might be able to do other than fiddle about with running ethernet cables all over the house or having to shell out for expensive equipment or cables? Really I'm at the end of my tether and need him to be able to concentrate on his exams!

You need to open these ports. If you don't know how to do this please consult your router manual, or contact their or your ISP's support if the router was provided by them

If you are playing an Xbox 360 game through the Xbox One's backward compatibility feature, you are able to play it online.

While playing the Xbox 360 game online, players on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles would populate the same servers and lobbies.

As a sidenote, the Xbox 360 version of GTA V is currently NOT backward compatible with the Xbox One.

You weren't able to play online before game pass core either. You have always needed a subscription to play xbox one games online.

Yes, Series X users will be able play Xbox One S and Xbox X players online. You'll also be able to play the same BC 360 titles online the Xbox One plays.

The only games not supported will be the Kinect titles.

Gold is required for all online gameplay on Xbox One. This isn't anything new. It's not that pricey. Back when I started playing games online, I would pay 15$ plus tax to be able to play just one game online. Microsoft allows you to play any game you own
online at a lower price point. I think that's quite reasonable.
