Xbox One on older TV

Hi,

I am currently deciding whether to get a PS4 or an Xbox One and I read a customer review on Amazon or somewhere where the guy said his PS4 would only display in 480p because he apparently had an old TV. I guess this guy was a bit clueless as to TV settings
and HD resolutions as you can imagine with people who write these sort of reviews but I just want to check as my TV is old and is limited in its resolutions. I have a Samsung L23R71 which was very popular among Xbox 360 owners in the first couple of years
when it launched. I have had it since January 2007 and I know I will have to replace it at some point soon. It apparently accepts 1080i but downscales to 720p. It doesn't accept 1080p at all, I think. Can any of you guys tell me if Xbox One users have had
issues displaying games in certain resolutions or that instead of displaying at say 1080i or 720p it displays at something like 480p? I just want to know if I want to display the console at 720p there will be no major issues. I know 720p is not anywhere near
the quality of 1080p and I do plan to upgrade at some point but I want to know for now that my current TV will be ok.

Xbox One Older TV 1080i

Can the TV handle 720p? If so is the resolution on the Xbox One set to 720p?

Yes it can. I thought the Xbox One auto detects? I guess I can try hooking it up and switching it that way. Thanks!

Yes, if your TV can display 720p like you stated, your Xbox will be perfectly fine running 720p. It won't downscale to 480p. There are no problems regarding any resolutions that I'm aware of.

The PS4 can display 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 480p. PS4 should work fine on most all HDTVs.

The Xbox One can only display 1080p, 720p and 480p. The Xbox One is the only current gen console that does NOT output 1080i. So if your HDTV only accepts 1080i it will downscale it to 480p on Xbox One.

This has been a big problem for those with TVs that can only display 1080i and there are many votes requesting that Microsoft add 1080i and more resolution options to the Xbox One on
Xbox Ideas, powered by UserVoice So far MS seems to be ignoring this issue completely.

If your TV can also display 720p then you should be ok, but if you want 1080i and more resolution options go with the PS4.

Thanks for your replies guys, I had the box for email notifications when the post got replies ticked but I never got any emails when you replied. Thanks for the advice. My TV is basically a 720p TV but it accepts 1080i but downscales it to 720p, so I always
just set my Xbox 360 and PS3 at 720p as advised in a review I read when I bought the TV.

I will probably buy one of the consoles soon, then. Thanks for your advice.

So did one final test before I did. I disconnected the console and hooked it up to another TV and the game dvr and Xbox record that function worked perfectly. Is there any reason why it'd work on one TV and not another. The TV it worked on is a current model
Vizio and the one it didn't work on was an older Panasonic. Both have hdmi inputs. Is there any reason the older TV would render the game dvr useless.

No my tv is a crappy no-name brand 19 inch hd tv. Nothing special about it, and it did it on an older tv as well on my xbox one. Still baffled as to how this is happening...
