xbox one not able to stream video off of my Windows based pc!?

Please, please tell me a whole department has been fired over this.

And please don't try explaining to me about "Play to". That is a joke. That is like telling me I can play games and then only offering Pong.

I bought this, unwrapped it and muddled around with Video Player and Plex only to find I have to pay a sub to view my own content!

Seriously, who the heck is making these decisions? My wife was excited to watch some home vids from this past Summer, nope!

Time to get out an old device called a boxee (presumably because it works out of the box).

Wasn't the Xbox touted as being the only device needed in the living room? Apparently marketing didn't communicate with tech on this.

    Seriously upset,

    Love Cal

    :)

  2. No System Video Player on Xbox One?

You can stream to Xbox one by using windows media player. I have windows 7 and was able to stream it successfully. Just open windows media player on your PC right click on the video you want to stream and scroll down to play to and select Xbox one. You can
    also create a playlist.

I have to agree with you. I've been on the fence about buying an X1, and everytime I get close to buying one, I learn about some other stupid defect or flaw. I use my 360 to watch videos and view pics off my PC several times a week. To have the X1 not be
able to do that is ridiculous, especially as its been touted as the end all and be all of entertainment devices. I also use my 360 to stream Netflix nearly daily, I'm still expecting to find out the X1 can't do that either.

The Xbox One can do that without using Play To.

Either search the app store for the Media Player app or plug in a USB with media files on it to be prompted to download it.

Once downloaded it can 'pull' video from your Windows based PC. Never tried viewing pics with my One though.

On the 360 you can do both using "Windows Media Center". I've been told that that isn't available on X1. I'm sure I could plug in a USB to watch videos.... after downloading them onto it from my computer. However, on 360 I can remotely connect the xbox to
my desktop and play the files directly off the computer through the 360 onto my tv.

Telling me I can use a usb to view videos is like telling me my phone can take pictures if I first duct tape a camera to it.

You can remotely connect your One to your PC as well if you download the Media Player app on the console.

The USB comment was an alternative way to get the download over searching for it on the marketplace.

Here is an FAQ about it
    support.xbox.com/.../media-player-faq
    .

It took a while for the One to catch up with the 360 on DNLA but its almost there.

xbox one not able to stream video off of my Windows based pc!?

Maybe I'm reading something wrong at your link, but I see this...

"What are the different ways to play audio, photo and video content on Media Player?"

ANSWER: "You can play media from a USB 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 removable drive."

So no mention of streaming directly from your PC.

"Is there third-party software that I can use to stream media content from my PC to Media Player?"

ANSWER: "The Xbox One team tests extensively to ensure that Xbox will work well with Windows Media Player software. If you decide to use third-party software, contact that software’s manufacturer for support."

Why would you need a third party to stream content if Media Player had that ability? Looks to me like X1 can only play content via USB or other removable device unless a non supported third party work around is used to stream content to Media Player. Big
step back from the 360. Don't know why they just didn't make it work with "Media Center" like on the 360.

the media player includes dlna, so streaming from a pc, network drive works perfectly for me, you have the option to play files from usb also.

That is exactly what I've said Farscape, top show by the way.

Either I've been explaining myself far more badly than I'd thought or eber3 doesn't want his impression of the One not being able to 'pull' media challenged.

I'm just telling you what I've heard, from three different sources counting the OP here. Nwrlds told me here that you can, then posted a link that seems to say you can't stream from PC short of using third party work arounds that MS doesn't recommend.

Media Player dlna, is there some sort of separate charge for this as the OP claims?; "I bought this, unwrapped it and muddled around with Video Player and Plex only to find I have to pay a sub to view my own content!"

If so, that's not much of a solution.

xbox one not able to stream video off of my Windows based pc!?

Different ways. You can use the Media Player app to stream OR use it to play media off a USB. You seem to want the Xbox One not to have this ability, even though it does exist.

From what the OP posted he is trying to play videos through Xbox Video, which is a service from Microsoft much like Netflix.

It's past midnight here but tomorrow if you don't believe me I'll record a video of me using the Media Player app to 'pull' media from my PC.

However in the meantime, would you believe Major Nelson and Albert Penello .

plex is a third party app that charges, you don't need this, windows media player on the pc will share any music, picture or video on the network that the xbox one media player can access, if you have a network drive that has dlna built in the you can stream
from that, it costs nothing, the only thing that costs is xbox music, xbox video, Netflix etc etc.

"You seem to want the Xbox One not to have this ability, even though it does exist."

I don't know where you're getting that idea from. I've heard twice in the past it can't be done, hence why I replied to the OP. You came along said it can be done, then posted a link that doesn't confirm that and in fact implies it can't be done. All I've
done since my initial post here is ask you and Farscape questions about how the X1 plays videos and attempted to clarify what I've heard both here in this thread and outside of it. If wanting to understand if, and how, the X1 plays videos from PC makes me
want it "not to have this ability", then I guess I'm guilty.

I have no idea if my network has dlna ability or not. The only way I've ever shared directly from my PC to anything else was my 360 via "Media Center".

I see the video is dated for August, perhaps that explains what I've heard in the past. Maybe it used to be unable to stream from PC but now can?
