xbox one no longer seeing external hard drive

Hi

Have had a western digital passport external (powered) drive attached to our xbox one console to increase storage which has been fine, Drive is working with lights on etc, but now the xbox one can't detect it. Have tried all suggestions - changing the usb
port it's attached too, hard reboot, and unticking that box about 'When Xbox is off, turn off storage' in power options. Console is up to date with updates. Has anyone found a solution to this?

I've just finished downloading/installing the newest system update for xbox one. The xbox now no longer recognizes my external hard drive. I have tried numerous times restarting the system, as well as unplugging/replugging in the external hard drive.

I'm sorry to hear about the situation you are in. Let's see what we can do about it.

What's the drive's exact model?

Could you check if the drive is visible on a working PC? What happens when you plug the drive in? Does it pop up in the file explorer as usual? If not, is it visible in
Device Manager and
Disk Management?

I'd also like to ask you to run some diagnostic tests with
WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. If the tool recognizes the drive I'd check if it passes both the quick and the extended tests. Have in mind that the extended test does take quite a while to complete.

Ok thanks, it's a Western Digital My Book 2tb.

Plugged into windows - shows up in explorer, device manager and disk management

Quick test with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool shows up some bad sectors - option to repair (I haven't pursued this option yet)

Running the extended test but 17 and a half hours test time!!!, Not sure if I can do this test as would need to leave it on when out at work

Should I try the repair bad sectors from the quick test?

Now has dissapeared from explorer (running extended test) but still in safely remove hardware, device manager and disk management

 

Just re ran the smart test this time it passed!

Hey again Apologies for the belated answer!

The drive does appear to have some problems. I would suggest to run the extended test all the way to the end and then post screenshots from the results of both the quick and the extended. You can also use another tool to get the raw values of the S.M.A.R.T.
status and post them here (make sure you hide the serial number of the drive).

You can try running chkdsk /r from the cmd on your PC to try to isolate the problematic sectors but once a drive has started to receive such bad sectors it is prone to failure sooner or later so I would suggest to check if the drive is still under warranty
and replace it if it does have bad sectors.
