Xbox one needs an update to connect to internet- but needs internet to update

So I moved into university accommodation last week. I connected my xbox with no problems to the wifi available there, but because I didn't yet have a full account with them I had to log in to the wifi as a guest. Guest wifi has to be resubmitted every 7 days.

Due to being busy, its been 5 days since my connection had to be reinstated on my xbox, but I haven't had time to do it. Since then the xbox has updated. When I switched my xbox on, it continuously brings me to a "There was a problem with your update" page, because it hasn't updated cause no internet. My only options are to try again, stay offline, switch off the xbox or check network. However, when I try to reconnect to the wifi, which would direct me to microsoft edge, it goes back to the error page.

Basically I have to connect to the internet to update, but my xbox refuses to let me until its updated. What do I do? I have tried to do an offline update but I don't own any USB flash drives with enough space.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean but whenever I try to do anything network based, either from the error page or the general settings, it always sends me back to the error page.

I have found another forum with the same error code however their problem is more to do with the network connection than the update. I know my problem is probably mostly due to the network connection, but it's not letting me connect at all.

I've now plugged in a network cable, but the xbox is still offline. When I checked the wired network from the error page it said more authentication needed and then sent me straight back to the error page when I tried to authenticate it. Other times it doesn't even get to the authentication needed page.

Have you tried resetting by bringing the troubleshooter? Just to check if the Xbox is going to actually let you connect to the internet before trying to update itself!

We appreciate your coming to the Xbox community, and we're sorry you're having this issue. From what you told us, I would recommend that you try resetting your console to factory defaults while you are offline.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.

Select Reset console.

On the Reset your console? screen, you'll see three options:

- Select the option to keep your games and apps so that they are not deleted, make sure you know your email and password as they will be removed from the console and you will need to add them again.

If you can access the settings, try to soft reset your console: Select System > Settings > System > Console info > Select Reset console > Choose Reset and keep my games and apps.

Hey there, yes, unfortunately the Xbox One is heavily reliant on the internet and needs an update straight out of the box. I know with the 360 you could get the updates from the web, but I can't find anything similar for the Xbox One.

Generally games with have an update as well, I'm not sure I've played one game so far that hasn't need an update from the internet. I would definitely wait until you have a steady internet connection.
