Xbox One messing up with External HDD connected

Hi, I have 2 external HDDs, a 500GB one and 750GB one, both are USB 3.0. The 500GB one I've had for about a year now and it was working fine until about 3 months ago, I have tested the 750GB HDD and it's causing the same problems. I have looked all over
the internet for a solution and I just can't seem to find one, now moving onto what is happening with my console.

I use my external drives for more storage as I have the 500GB Xbox One, so I always have one of the drives plugged in to the side USB 3.0 port, bearing in mind my girlfriend has the exact same drive and plugs it into the exact same port with no issues, It's
fine for maybe 2-3 hours until my controller randomly disconnects and I am unable to sync it, after numerous times of reconnecting and disconnecting again, it signs me out of my account and disconnects me from my wi-fi.

It seems like the problem is not the drive but the console itself but I have played for the past 2 weeks with no problems with no drives plugged in, I plugged in my drive last night to play one of the games on it and tried playing again at like 10am this
morning but it's causing the same old problems again.

Would love if someone has a solution for this, I no longer have warranty on my console and I have considered buying a new one, but that is a last resort.

    Thank you.

    :)

    Very strange external HDD Problem

    Hi everyone

I have a problem that's only just started on an external HDD... I have an external 5TB drive that is used to store MKV files I have made from my dvd collection. Basically i made the MKV's with makemkv saved to my laptop then transferred to the external HDD. These are then played via connecting the external HDD to the xbox one

Everything has been working fine (some 400 films), then I decided to save the output from makemkv directly to the external HDD connected to the laptop (rather than copy them over from the laptop). I did this for about 20 films, but now none of the new films will play in either media player or VLC on the xbox (all other films prior to this work fine). Ive even tried making an mkv file the way i did it previously and copy the film to the external hdd but these don play either. If the drive is connected to the laptop all films play fine. Its also worth noting that the films that dont play in media player on the xbox one also dont show a thumbnail tile (just the play symbol)

This is driving me nuts. Any help appreciated

    Hey there Wobble,

If the drives are not connected and the controller isn't losing it's sync then it sounds like the issue may be with the hard drives. Have you tried to re-format them or plug them in one at a time to see if this helps? Do they have external power supplies
as well? What happens if you have the controller connected via USB as opposed to wirelessly with the drives plugged in?

    Let us know!

The issue is not with the drives as I have used them with my girlfriends console with no problems, also my controller works just fine with her console too

  6. Wobble,

At the risk of repeating myself to others in the forum, I have been following these external drive problems with Xbox for a while. And, just based on what you have posted so far, I agree it's not the drives and or controller. So, to save some time in
not performing a series of steps that may have little to no affect on the problem..., may I recommend resetting your Xbox One to "factory
    defaults
". I hope that you will be able to follow up and let me and others in the forum know if this fixed the problem.

Is your console connected to the 2,4 GHz RF-band? If so, and if your wireless router support dual band (2,4 GHz, 5 GHz), try connect your console to the 5 GHz RF-band instead.

If this is not an option, try connect your console with an Ethernet cable instead, and have us know whether your console is able to stay connected, or not.

You haven't told us what connection type your girlfriend is using.

USB 3.0 is susceptible to cause noise, or interference over 2,4 GHz.

To connect to the 5GHz band would I have to take the top panel off my xbox and connect it to one of the other little plug things on the wireless adapter?

  10. Wobble,

I'm sorry to hear that. But, a BIG thank you for following up. I have some significant experience in RF technology and I'm a little dubious about interference from your WiFi. Indeed, this would seem to imply that there is some problem with the active and
passive RF shielding in your Xbox. Given that the drives and controller work with your girlfriend's Xbox, I suggest trying her console in your current WiFi setup and environment. Of course, that is if you are not already at the same location and using the
same WiFi.... If you have no issues using the drives and the controller and the same WiFi with your girlfriend's Xbox, than clearly the problem and been isolated to your Xbox. At which point a decision needs to be made. Have the random disconnections gotten
so bad it's time for you to send in your Xbox for "Device repair" ? Double check the "Xbox
    warranty information
" before deciding to send it in. However, with all that said. I do agree that the best way to connect an Xbox to the internet is through Ethernet.

Now, as you and other can see, I'm a little bias toward some kind of on going Xbox One USB 3.0 external drive issue. And I could be mistaken in this situation. But, and as I understand it, you said the 500GB HD has been working with the Xbox for almost a
year with no problems, and that you tried a different 750GB HD only to have the same problem, and that the controller in question does not randomly disconnect from your Xbox when no USB 3.0 drive are plugged into it, and that same controller works fine with no
problems on your girlfriend's Xbox. It may turn out that the USB 3.0 external drives are not the direct cause of the problem, but the trigger for it. So, if this was me, I would be taking even more aggressive steps in troubleshooting before sending my Xbox
in for repairs. I can share those efforts with you late, if you would like. But, the reason for making these posts is to help other Xbox fans get their consoles' up running again with the minimal amount of hassle. So, if plugging an Ethernet cable in makes
the random disconnects go away. and you are OK with that, then go for it....
