XBOX ONE messages icon problem

I have seen old posts asking for help with this problem, but no solutions. My Xbox One message icon is showing that I have (1) message sent to me, but when I look in messages there is nothing that is unread and it's showing I have (0) messages. I have the
same problem with the Xbox app in Windows 10.

I have tried wiping my XBOX ONE completely, but when I log in after a fresh install the problem persists. Has anybody figured out how to fix this annoying little problem?

Message screen on console won't stop loading

I am able to send messages on my Xbox app with no problem but when I go to send a message on console, it gives me a circle loading icon that never stops at the top right of the screen. I've searched as much as I could about this and I can't find anybody
having the same problem as me. It is not an error code that says I just "cant send messages", it's just that silly loading icon. Please help, so inconvenient!

It's literally the same steps as sending a regular message.

When you click send message to someone, there will be a microphone icon next to where you usually type the text. Just click that.

 

Could you open up individual message threads and see if that triggers the 1 to reduce to a zero? Somehow, there could be an older unread message within a thread. The culprit is often a message from "Xbox Live" so if you have a current thread with that 'user',
I would try that first.

Also, start up a backwards compatible and open the Xbox 360 Guide by pressing the Menu+View buttons (the two buttons either side of the central Xbox/Home button) and see if there are any 'unread' friend requests or voice messages.

I don't even remember the last time I received a message through Xbox Live. It's been years. I tried messaging myself though my wife's account and the number increased by 1 when I logged back in, but returned to "1" after I deleted it.

How can I start up a "backwards compatible"?

 

Do you have any Xbox 360 games installed on your Xbox One? Those are the ones I mean. If you also have an actual Xbox 360 you could use, that would achieve the same thing.

 

OK, I just installed an old Xbox 360 game, accessed the Xbox 360 guide, and no messages were shown (even old threads). I left the game and unsurprisingly still saw that little "1" next to the Messages icon in the Xbox One dashboard.

Ugh.

 

I just spent a few minutes with Nicole at Xbox Tech Support and we figured it out. I had an unread message in the Xbox 360 SmartGlass app that I had uninstalled from my iPad a looooong time ago and that was triggering the "message waiting" icon. I re-installed
SmartGlass on my iPad, deleted the offending message, and the icon returned to normal on both my Xbox One dashboard AND the Windows 10 Xbox app.

Order in the universe has been restored.

The problem turned out to be an unread message that had been squirreled away in the Xbox 360 SmartGlass app that I had uninstalled from my iPad several months ago. I re-installed the Xbox 360 SmartGlass app, deleted the offending message, and the message
icon in both the Xbox One Dashboard and the Windows 10 Xbox app returned to normal. I don't know why the message only showed up in SmartGlass, but I'm just glad the *** thing is gone.

Order has been restored to the universe.
