  1. XBox One Memory Shortage

I just purchased the 1tb XBox One. Can someone explain to me why i only have 781gb of storage? I realize that the system sets aside a certain amount for updates and to help run core functions. However, i do not understand why i am missing 244gb of storage.
To be sure it does not need that much free ROM to run. In addition, why does every game have to install before it can be played? I understand that it is part due to the wish that games run faster and have less lag, but this should be an optional feature. I
have only played 9 games (all of which installed before i could play them), and it has used up 338gb. This is absurd. If something is advertised at a certain amount of storage, it should have that amount of storage for consumer use. The system functions should
be a separate part of the memory.

    :)

I'll explain so since the os is based off Windows the os measures space in a different format it doesn't measure it in gigabytes I forget what it measures it in but anyways so you still have 1tb there isn't a memory shortage

  4. Hi,

There is a slight memory shortage, but this is by design. Firstly, your 1TB Xbox One doesn't actually have 1TB of space, 1TB hard drives when formatted are 931GB. All 1TB hard drives are this size, on consoles PCs, Macs and STB's. The system does not see 1GB
as 1024MB. So when you do the conversion a 1TB drive is 931GB. Same as a 32GB flash drive only has 29GB free. All manufactures do this, it's not the fault of Microsoft - who doesn't even manufacture the hard drives by the way.

The Xbox One reserves about 150GB of storage for system use. What exactly it uses it for I do not know. Part of it is for the Operating System, of which there is actually three.

All games must be installed. This is mandatory. The reason for this is simple, while Blu-ray drives speeds have improved, they are not fast enough for next generation games. They have poor access and seek times compared to even a standard SATA based 5600rpm
hard drive. This is the reason why games need to be installed.

Add to that the size of the games. Next generation games have better graphics which means the texture sizes are bigger and take up more space on the hard disc. This is why your 9 games are using 338GB. All current generation games are this size now, on Xbox
    One, PS4 and PC.

    I hope that helps.

Some of it has to do with the way the storage is calculated but I am not going to try to explain that here. It would take way too long. The total amount of storage does include the amount required by the OS. Just like when you buy a PC the OS is included
in the system total storage. All a game console is is a PC that is made specifically for gaming so why wouldn't the system storage be counted in the total. As far as the requirements for the games. That will vary from game to game but in general the games
storage requirements these day are massive.

From what I see you have 9 games installed and almost half of your HDD available for more games.

Upgrading the storage is really simple and inexpensive. All you need is a USB 3.0 external HDD with 256 GB or more of disk space.

Most retailers will tell you that they have no clue as it is up to Microsoft on how many Xboxes a store gets and when they get them. So your best bet is to ask them when they get shipments in and call on those days as most places will hold items for people
for a few hours. The Wii was the same way when it came out so just keep checking.

The Xbox Ones are having typical new system bugs. Which is rather frustrating...but not much you can do about it other then wait for a fix or take it back.
