It seems so simple to say, but the media player on the One is desperately lacking. I've had to turn my PS3 on for the first time in months because I'm completely unable to use the One atm, due to network issues. Normally I'd say this is fine: things are
going to go wrong with Live at times, I dislike this, but I can accept it. That's life. However, I see no reason as to why this means I can't watch my own media on a network drive literally 3 inches from the console. I had turned the console off halfway through
watching an episode and it resumed, for all of 10 seconds before crashing out to give me a "can't connect to live" error. I tried again, and had the same thing happen. So tried the obvious: disconnect from Live. I didn't realise this would just disable the
network altogether. The final result was obvious: it's not gonna work, trust in Sony.

Barring this disappointing sequence, there still various issues that I can see with the Media Player. The kinect features are baaad. Granted, I'm Scottish, and if you've ever seen anything about voice-activated elevators you'll know how difficult it is to
get that working, but sometimes (sometimes) when it mishears me, it will give an overlay of a few choice episodes with an option. Why can't this be a command?

Also, in folders with a lot of videos, such as the movies folder, it would be nice to be able to say maybe "jump to R" or "look for the matrix" to have it go to sections instantly.

Anyone else find that this app needs some improvements, or more to the point, is there any way to actually suggest/request them?

    :)

XBox 360 vs XBox One vs PS4 as media player

I also recommend you look into Plex media server
Xbox One S shine above as a media player if you also need a 4k disk player with full audio support. It can also support Plex DVR

of course both consoles also play top end games

if you don't need that then maybe a dedicated media player - personally I use a mix of two AppleTV4 and two Nivdia Shield TV's in different rooms/purpose

    should of kept my 360

The Xbox 360 is still a better option for media consumption, blu-ray aside for course. The media player app on the One is simply a over-organised mess and simply isn't as quick or easy as the system media player on the 360.

It's been over a year since the One has been out, the "it's new, it'll improve in time" excuse is beginning to wear a little thin.

    september update rolling out

I read about the miniguide here:
    www.theverge.com/.../xbox-one-media-player-september-update

"The update includes a number of improvements focused at the TV integration on the Xbox One, including a boot to TV option, live TV mini guide, and an expansion of Microsoft’s OneGuide TV guide data to Brazil, Mexico, Austria, and Ireland."

    Media player app.

Media player app is a good start, but needs some improvements:

1, needs to be able to scale media to full screen

2, would be a great to be able to have a start screen that has favourites/shortcuts

3, would be great to be able to pin folders to home pins

Trying to play movies from a flash drive and can't find the app

There is some specific criteria your media needs to meet in your USB in order for it to play media through the app, click this link and it'll give you all the
info on the media player app and what it can do
