  1. Xbox one Local Network ARP issues.

    Hello every one.

First a little bit about my network set.

Cable Modem --> Dum min switch -->

Port #1 connected to my local netgrear router

Ports #2 connect to my xbox one

My xbox one is pulling a public IP from my local provider (no arp

I am a destiny gamer, and over the last several weeks I have had tons of connections issues.

After getting tired of the errors, I started to dig in to them (from a network point of view)

I started a local network data capture, and what I found was very interesting.

It seems just about every time I have a issue, i see my xbox one, trying to do a local ARP broad cast, and from the best I can tell, there are no reply.

When I first saw this, I assume the issue was 100% related to my internet provider (comcast)

but I notice my local PC does not loss it's network access.

Below is a sample of what I am seeing with tcpdump

(I used a network spam port to grab this data)

    [Mod Removed]

I assume the xbox is broad casting for it's next hop IP, because the TTL in the mac table is about to expire

After a few seconds, I loss all network access on my

But I am not seeing any reply's come back.

Does any one know of a way to hard code a arp entry on the xbox one?

Or a way to adjust the arp TTL timer.

As a comparison, here are what the arp broad cast look like when I am not seeing any issues.

(This leads me to believer that the arp TTL on the xbox is very very low.)

    [Mod Removed]

Any help you that you can give me on the ARP table TTL for a xbox one would be great.

And if you have a way to hard set a mac entire, that would be better

    -greg

    :)

Xbox connects to network, but doesn't respond to anything

I can get my Xbox to connect to the local network, but whenever I try to connect to Live, it says DNS error, even though the DNS servers I put in are correct. I can obtain an IP address, but that's it. I'm using the standard Xbox 360 250 GB. I've tried
restarting my network hardware, modem connection, automatic and manual DNS servers, but every time the Xbox just says it connects to the network but not the internet. There are other devices on the network that cannot ping the Xbox, including the gateway.
Yet the gateway/router sees the Xbox in it's Arp table.

XBox One pad showing on my wifi network

This may be common knowledge but when I turn on my pad it shows on my routers ARP/DHCP table as an active device, I didn't realise it connected to the wifi network as well as the xbox ?

    Can you post Modem Details?

The Problem is: Modet modems of Cable companies can give an IP Adress only to one device., If you connect a switch and then connect more than 1 device to the switch only 1 Device gets an IP.

You can test it: connect your xbox directly with the modem and RESTART the modem. Then your cablemodem should know a new Device (your xbox) and give it an IP Adress. If you connect a new device you always have to restart your modem.

If this works your only solution is: Buy a router and connect this router to your cablemodem. Restart the modem and your router get's the IP. Your router will manage internally ALL other IP Adresses and you can use ALL Devices you have.

I pay for two public IP's on my comcast (internet) connection.

I already have a smart hub setup between my internal home network and the cable modem.

I am unsure were the issue is.

The issue is either the provider is not answering all the arp borad cast that are being generated by the xbox.

or xbox is senting way to may broad cast and mayber the server is seeing this as a type of DOS

During normal ops, I am seeing my xbox send out a arp broad cast every 30 seconds (seems high)

When I have network issues, I see a arp broad cast go out, and no reply

After a few mins, I start seeing reply's

But the xbox does not seem to be seeing them.

I need to hard boot the xbox to resolve my issue

    Hello,

It's suggested not to post personal information like IP-adress with open ports for security reasons.

    Connectivity

Reading what you described, I'd look into configuring Port Forwarding for your local network. As well as reviewing if there is
QoS enabled on the networking gear, which might be keeping Xbox Live traffic down, to avoid network congestion for people streaming Netflix, Pandora, or other streaming services. You can either turn off QoS or prioritize the device and service, it can vary
settings-wise for that on the equipment.

There are a few other things to look at as well, depending on the options of the equipment, like traffic shaping, ARP tables, NAT, etc.

If you're not comfortable changing those settings on your equipment, then reach out to a friend or someone in your area who is familiar and comfortable. Sometimes there are resources at local game shops that know that kind of information and can help as
    well.

Why is download speed capped by MAC Address ?

Hi - thanks for coming back to me.

Please do not suggest it is the ISP - I am a network professional and can assure you the layer 2 local MAC Address does not leave my local LAN. MAC (layer 2) is simply not routable on the internet - only IP after being NAT'd to a non RFC1918 address (layer 3) is. As a MS consultant - I am very surprised you are not aware of this basic Ethernet knowledge.

To add - An ISP 'may' throttle traffic based on an IP port or dns (or packet pattern analysis) - but it will not be doing it via the devices local MAC - as it has no (direct) knowledge of this. The MAC is used by the switch/router ARP table to direct the traffic on the local LAN only.
