Hey Guys, I love my Xbox One, but right now, the hand gesturing is not practical versus the speed of a remote, or even the convenience of voice command. This is my question... you know how we swipe and tap with our smartphones and tablets? Is that possible
with the Kinect one day? Imagine laying in bed, and you simply nonchalantly, swipe with your index finger in the air, and tap your selection in the air. Basically, how we control our tablet with the swiping, the tapping, the scrolling, the 2 finger zooming,
etc. Is it possible for the Kinect to one day read our fingers like that? Could they improve it so much, that a future update makes that possible? Or, will that be for next, next, next generation, maybe a decade away or something?

    What do you guys think?

    :)

It's possible now. The way the gesture controls were done was based off of many of the movements you've described.

I know that the Kinect can read QR codes with a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e ease you can sit 4 metres away just raise your hand a little with an Xbox QR Code card, and bam it reads it sooooooo easily. Just goes to show that since it can read QR codes so fast and easily,
the same should be possible with gesture control. The Kinect hardware is capable but M just needs to be smart and provide an update with better code in it to help improve gesture control. And yes I have Xbox 360 and Xbox 1 smart glass.

  6. Yeah, they need to improve the gestures. This pushing the palm in to select, or push it and hold to see menu is not practical at all. It works, yes, but still too much concentration. With remote or voice, who would waste time doing that? Anything else would
have been better. For example, snapping your fingers is select. Waving good bye to go back to xbox home. This two hand pull thing to go home is ridiculous. It's almost like instead of thinking "convenience," they were taking the "cool" route like Minority
Report. LOL! I can think of a million simply ways. How about reading xbox sign language? One finger to select, 2 finger to see menu, 3 finger to go back, fist to go home, etc.

I don't know how this works, and I could be offending the hard workers at Microsoft by simplifying things. That's why I'm asking.. how far are we away from more practical gestures? Could it be now, or are we next, next generation console away.

If it can be now, they really need to go back and redo all the commands and think simplicity. We don't need to look like Tom Cruise solving a crime. LOL!

We also don't want to look like some 30 or 40 year old who considers this kind of gesture normal for anyone under 30. It is kind of like sign language ;D. Kinect can EASILY read QR codes too even if you are sitting 4m away hold your hand only a little with
the QR code and it reads it. It's not like you have to show it and smack it against the Kinect's face for it to read it. And it can be done 4 metres away as long as the code is facing where the Kinect's eye (cam) is pointing.

I think the only problem with that, is it could be to sensitive and start doing things you don't want it to. I think it would be possible though.

  9. Chromecaster, I can agree with you regarding the gestures used for selection, but I find navigating such as zooming in and out and minimizing and maximizing your games and apps to be rather quite intuitive. There are some good examples and some bad examples
with gestures - it's just a matter of MS identifying what works and what doesn't and changing things accordingly.

I like some of your ideas though - perhaps you should post them on the feedback site. Xbox One Kinect Technology & possible future improvements.... ;)

That's way too advanced for it. It can't even recognize the English language in many English speaking countries.

Before they try to improve on any gestures etc, they need to enable voice commands everywhere otherwise there is absolutely no reason for everyone to buy it. That will kill it off faster than anything.

^^You are an American living in Ireland right? You can switch your region to US and voila voice commands enabled.

^This... in fact, there are intermittent times when mine accidentally thinks I'm gesturing when I'm not. There have been times when my wife is sitting in the chair beside me, playing
with the dogs and some of her hand movements have started to register on the screen. I've actually started an app by simply leaning forward to get a drink from our coffee table.

Having to hold up your hand with a flat palm toward the Kinect may seem like an inconvenience and obtrusive, but I'd rather it be that way than to have it constantly doing things
I don't want because they didn't employ some kind of gesture to 'get its attention' before it does something. Can you imagine if they made the gesture controls 'sensitive' enough to pick up those minute little movements with little to no delay?

The voice command technology (arguably for some) works well, but gestures is an area that will need a lot of time to get right.

A Blue Illusion.. If sensitivity is an issue, they can add some sort of on/off command. Same as XBOX SELECT, XBOX STOP LISTENTING... well for Kinect, it can be KINECT SELECT, KINECT STOP WATCHING. Or, to turn on kinect, hold up your hand with a flat palm,
to turn it off, hold up two hands with flat palms.

"Having to hold up your hand with a flat palm toward the Kinect may seem like an inconvenience and obtrusive, but I'd rather it be that way than to have it constantly doing things I don't want..."

But then, it will never be anything but a cool trick to showoff to people, but truly and honestly, we never use it when we're "REALLY" doing things. The remote and voice is always better. So yeah, if they can give us an on / off command, that would solve
    the sensitivity issue.

  15. Galactic Geek, I think that the zooming in and out gestures are the most practical of the current bunch.
