Xbox One Kinect Not Controlling TV

I fear the IR blaster in my Kinect may be dying but want to make sure I've tried everything before I replace it. Thanks in advance for the help.

This happened with the old dash and the NXOE. The system will register the Xbox Volume Up or Down commands (icon shows in upper right of screen with correct command listed) but, usually, the volume won't actually change. The odd thing is if I stand close
to the Kinect/TV (within 3 feet) there is a much higher chance (almost 100%) the command will fully work. Additionally, when using "Xbox Turn Off/On" the TV and DirecTV box won't be turned on/off. When I first got my Xbox One, around 2 years ago, the commands
fully worked. I haven't changed anything but within the last 8 months or so the previously mentioned issues have started and seemed to be getting worse.

    Here's a video showing the issue: VID_20151113_084254.mp4.

I've tried removing and re-adding the TV several times as well as a hard reset. Iv'e also tried using other suggested remote codes to no success. Other commands such as Xbox Watch "channel name" work well. I have DirecTV and use the remote that came with
the service and have a 3-4 year old Visio flat screen TV.

    What else should I try?

    :)

    Kinect Not Consistently Controlling TV

Thanks Hydro Skillet I'll give it a try. The smartglass app actually suffers the same issue with volume control.

It's IR, so re positioning can certainly help. Just because it can control one device, does not mean the IR blaster is making it to the other one. Also make sure the front of the Kinect is clean. With the link I posted you can go through the TV setup and
test your connection until it works. if you have SmartGlass you can enable the remote and use volume up and volume down, or power on /off to see if they work.

I think the issue is with the system OS. After the NXOE update, the IR sensors in the Kinect has not operated correctly (as well as voice commands. It appears that the system has reduced the sensitivity of the Kinect and its operation. I've noticed the reduced
sensitivity as well and think it is due to the elimination of the gesture feature, which required a sensitive sensor mode.

Only thing I can suggest, at this point is either wait for MS to fix the OS, or bug them until they do fix it.

I appreciate the answer, however I'm not sure I agree.

    1) This was an issue for me before the NXOE update.

    2) I don't think it's a sensitivity issue because the system register the command (noted by showing the correction on the top right of the screen) but it can't perform the correct function.

  6. I think it is a sensitivity issue since because it can't always recognize the command, and perform it correctly. Sometimes, with voice commands, speech patterns can be misread by computers by how narrow the parameters are set, it might recognize it, but
can't recognize it exactly as it was programmed to do. I deal with this all the time, particularly when I'm working with young kids with speech impairments, and vocalizations typically have to be in one form for the computer to recognize the command, and interpret
    it perfectly.

While I've noticed after NXOE, the sensitivity has been reduced, before it came out, I have noticed certain ways it would not work as planned, particularly with interference or vocalizations that are not perfect. Speaking fast has not worked well.

  7. I was tinkering with mine, since I have a similar setup of TV location and Kinect location. My TV speakers, however are faced at the bottom of the TV aiming directly at the sensor. If I calibrate it with volume up, it sets the sensitivity at a low point,
If I keep the volume down, the sensitivity is somewhat higher, but again, it depends on the background noises in the room and how well the sensor is able to distinguish a command vs TV.

What I think MS needs to do is have it be programmed to the users voice, where the sensor is programmed to automatically recognize the speech patterns of the user and the commands are learned through the programming where it will tell what a command is faster
and more clear to the computer.

The sensitivity of the system to voice commands has definitely decreased for me after NXOE. It seems I have to be more cognizant of the volume of my voice (responds better when I'm louder) and my diction ( responds better with more deliberate enunciation
    of all syllables).

As to the specific problem mentioned here with IR blaster - I occasionally have a case on XBOX Turn Off where one of the 3 components controlled will remain On (either Pioneer receiver, TV or DirecTV). I had chalked this up to interference (ambient light
or our dog running around near the components Xbox One Kinect Not Controlling TV :) ), but really not sure what the cause is. Maybe your room had too much ambient light for the IR to work with the TV and when you got closer you blocked some of that light? In the video I see light coming from
the left side of the room and that's where you seemed to be standing when the volume command started being acted upon by the TV.

My problem has been resolved. I happened to get a new TV on a Black Friday special and it showed up last Wednesday. After replacing the old TV and getting the new TV working with the Xbox I noticed that the "volume up/down" commands were working but it
still wouldn't turn on/off the DirecTV box when it should. In checking the settings I then noticed it wasn't set to do that with those commands for some reason so I changed that and now all is well. It is very odd because everything was working perfectly
at one point and I certainly never tinkered with those settings but I'm very glad it's working now and I didn't have to buy a new Kinect.

Crawpappy, thanks for updating your post with the positive results. I may have been an update that reset some of the settings that you had previously put in place. Regardless, glad that you now have it working properly.

  11. My kinect has been acting very strangely since the updates. It doesnt understand me most of the time. Saying the first word "xbox" does nothing, except when first turning it on. I also notice the kinect turning itself off, sometimes it restarts other times
    it just remains off.

Its really frustrating, and at this point i am thinking about just disconnecting the thing and use it as a book end or door stop.

Use to work good before the update

Yes recalibrating seems to work for a few hours for me. Weird thing is it works for my wife all the time. Its driving me nuts because she walks in and says xbox ... And it works, but for me nothing.

It use to work for me all the time. Never had a problem before the update.

  14. There has to be a sensitivity issue now. If i speak in a higher tone, it recognizes me.

X Box One stopped powering TV on and off

    Hi Electric Pi,

    See
    this link
for troubleshooting TV controls. Post back if these do not resolve your issue. Note that without the Kinect the only way to control your TV is with an
    IR blaster
for Xbox One. This includes powering the TV off and on.

    A/V power options

Do you have an original Xbox One, or a Xbox One S/X? If you have the original Xbox One (not the S or X) you will need to have Kinect in order to have the Xbox control your A/V equipment.

If you do have Kinect and/or a Xbox One S/X, make sure that the IR Blaster on the Kinect and the console aren't obstructed, and that the IR light can hit your equipment. If you have a home theater with dark walls, it might be that the IR signal can't be
reflected off the walls towards the A/V equipment.

And finally: The TV needs to be able to be controlled via Infrared remote controls. If you have a very modern TV with a Bluetooth remote, the Xbox can't control that. It has to be Infrared controlled.

Hiding Xbox One with Kinect behind a wall

Your controller will still work as long as it's synced to the console. You should run into any problem. Also, Might I recommend the xbox one Kinect tv mount if your going to have you Kinect set up like that. It will look even better when trying to hide wires.

Controlling your TV with the Xbox One X

The Xbox One X has an IR-emitter built into the front of the console (near the disc eject button), or it can use the Kinect. If either device is being obstructed by any objects, or not in a position where the IR light might not reach
the TV, the signal may not work.

    If you used a
    separate IR-emitter
with your original Xbox One, you can try using that with the Xbox One X. If you used a Kinect to control your TV, you will need to get a

    Kinect adapter
in order to plug it into the Xbox One X.
