Xbox One Instant On VS Energy Saving and External HDD

I just have some questions about the Xbox One

When Microsoft say updates and downloads download in the background when Instant On is on does that mean any update for any game will download and be ready, so in theory I won't see a message coming up saying your game needs an update when I click on the
game because it will already have downloaded? Also main systems updates I take it will donwload in the background but will still require you to turn on the console and reboot it?

And finally, under instant on what does it mean when it says "When xbox is off, turn off storage" does that basically mean any external HDD's stop spinning? And would it effect speed if I had it on or off, whats the difference?

External hard drive reboots when Xbox One is turned off

Is you Xbox on instant on mode? Of so the only way to get it to shut down is energy saving mode. The problem is the xbox checks for updates and various other things alot on instant on mode and has to spin up the external to do it.

If you xbox is on energy saving mode already then try a hard restart (hold power button until xbox is off, wait 30 seconds then turn it back on).

If You have your Xbox set to 'Instant On' then all system and game updates will download and install automatically. Meaning no more waiting to play games while updates download/install.

System updates will install but may need you to press the power on button instead of saying 'Xbox On'.

I have my external storage turned off while my Xbox is off. I've never noticed and speed differences with it being off.

 

Hi thanks for the reply. I am still really confused why there is "When xbox is off, turn off storage" because what does it actually do if you unchecked it because so far I have it checked, all my updates are downloading and installing fine I can install
disks onto my external HDD and then turn my xbox off in instant on mode and it just turns it self on and off when ever there is something to install so what is the actually point of having this option or am I missing something?

 

When externals were first allowed on the one external drives would continue to be on and running despite the xbox being turned off. The setting just means that when your Xbox goes of so does the External drive.

If your External is on all the time not only is it spinning but shortening its life span.

 

I shouldn't have to search the internet to find out what these things mean...
