1. Xbox One HD-DVD add-on compatibility

The question should not be if we want to support a dead tech. In the "professional technology field' you come across desktops and servers which still operate Windows XP, and WIndows 7. This is not because IT cannot replace a piece of hardware but more
because the user requires the preservation of a functionality not available in WIndows 8, a legacy app will not work or not supported in Windows 8 or user does not have the time to learn a completely new interface and it would be a significant impact to their
productivity.

Out with the old and in with the new is evident but all things can be accomplished with grace and tact. You would get a greater PR and fan base rating if you valued the previous investments in Microsoft wireless head gear and Microsoft console additions
which people have invested in obtaining for the purposes of believing that Microsoft's direction at the time was the best.

This is important because it shows that while we push forward, it is nice to know that Microsoft appreciates the loyalty we have given them by transitioning as much of the investment we have made over to the new console. We already transferred the Xbox
360 Dashboard to a degree and basically the multimedia (Blue-Ray, Music Player, etc) on the XB1 are seriously lacking in contrast to the XB1.

If it were so difficult to accomplish then why is the answer the following:

1.) By a micro home theater PC.

2.) Install W7 or W8

3.) ArcSoft's TotalMedia Theater 5 or 6

HTPC = $300-450

Windows = $150-200

Acrsoft Total Media = $80

About $700 for a work around seems like a slap in the face for the loyalty. No need to answer with disrespectful remarks and insinuations. Those who choose to differ from my opinion can do so but please, if your answer is just based on the ignorance of
"I know how to surf the web and facebook like a pro" then you have much to learn about the side of technology which is truly rich.

If I invest in a $3000 desktop PC and us it to strictly surf the web then I have wasted money. The same holds true for technology in business. It's just that our fan base is the business and it involves more than just swapping out PCs and servers. It
is a balance of architecting, planning, PR, negotiations, but more importantly customer satisfaction. The later entails a partnership in which the corporate technology department addresses the need for technological change while taking into consideration
that most, or all, of the previous functionality and access needs to preserved and/or improved. If it cannot be preserved then an effort is made to ask the software vendor for a software enhancement or change. This is part of the IT lifecycle. But most
of you already know this.

I can honestly say there is a reason why programmers rarely ascend into significant management positions. It is simply because programmers for the most part preface their responses with the face of "It's going to be extremely difficult" when in most cases,
it's just work... but so is getting up and showing and every other mundane task you can think of..

If MS really wanted to crush Sony, and it had a great chance but PR wasn't at the top of Microsoft's list, then MS needs to start valuing it's fan base and win them over by showing that they are appreciated and MS acknowledges that, unlike the PC market,
the console war is a much more frail beast.

The XB1 is a perfect example of what I am saying. PS4 outsold the XB1 by 1.4 million units. What should MS learn from this exercise? If the powers that be do the math, DRM and Internet a must killed 1.4 million consoles of potential revenues because someone
decide to dismiss the value of a simple user's perception. 1.4 million at $499.00 is equal to $698,600,000 just in console revenues. So , MS, go and show these numbers to the board members and the stock holders. Let me know if you walk out with your heads
attached to your neck.

Please, make no mistake that I am a huge MS proponent but MS made some seriously bad PR and marketing mistakes that are basically unforgivable which extend from the Windows Phone to the tables to the desktop and now the game console. I own all of the above
and love the new changes but I am ashamed to see just how poorly the non-desktop products sell due to bad PR and marketing. Microsoft, please stop the self inflicted bleeding. I am not saying that it will be easy but it is a road worth traveling.

:)

What are peoples thoughts on backward compatibility with all Xbox 360 accessories. Namely the HD DVD player. I appreciate the format is dead but I doubt I am alone in owning several films on this format. I'll be damned if I can't still watch a good old HD
DVD if I wish!

The HD-DVD drive is a USB interfacable drive which already exists on the XB1. It's just a driver, and a decoding media player (AKA a media player)

5. best soolution to your problem is to either buy a HD DVD player or keep your 360. Either way, dont wait on the XB1 to provide you support to a dead/abandoned platform.

6. The 360 has 4.7 million lines of code but the HD-DVD drive did not come built into the device. These were added much later. Just port over the contents of the disc which came with the drive from PPC to x86. The disc which came with the drive is what made
the drive work because it contained a driver, a codec library & a media player.

The HD DVD code in TMT 5/6 works "by accident". ArcSoft hasn't tested it

for years
.
"Just", as if drivers and HD DVD playback software can be picked up off the shelf at the local corner store.

The only HD DVD player software MS had was designed to run on the PPC CPU in the Xbox 360. They don't have an x86 version of it. It's a waste of resources to support a dead format.

Toshiba killed the HD-DVD format. When the war started between formats Toshiba said by the end of the year they would have 700 movie titles on HD-DVD but it never happened. Then the porn industry adopted blu-ray and that killed the HD format.Thats why VCR
beat Betamax. The porn industry dictates which format survives.

I can understand that the format is dead but since the Xbox One runs a variant of Windows 8 as one of the three operating systems on the platform, surely it wouldn't be that difficult to work a playback app?

10. I also have a bunch of hd-dvd movies but you can't expect the Xbox one to support something that has been dead for well over 5 years.

This, it would be wasted resources, maybe someone with some technical know who can make a app and pitch to microsoft, but wasting resources for a format that most people dont use, i dont own one hd-dvd movie

To me it was embarrassing that they included bluray to satisfy that market. For me they could have just kept improving the quality of Xbox Video and streaming apps. What they could have done is let everyone keep rented movies for as long as they want on
the hard drive but if they wanted unlimited downloads of that movie the customer would have to purchase it. The hard drive is only so big and soon people would have to erase them anyways. I do not see bluray lasting another 3 years, something better will
replace it. It sure should have made the HD DVD work just to satisfy its best customers. The customer that bought the HD DVD are very good Xbox customers, They tried to use everything offered to be a loyal Xbox Customer.
It isn't as if the software to play the format back does not exist
Not at Microsoft, at least not for x86.
HD DVD software hasn't been in development for years. You're talking about
supporting not just movie playback but the entire user interface layer on the disc and the framework to support it.
HD DVD software hasn't been in development for years. TMT 5/6 are running TMT3 (maybe 4) old code that was left in the program. To support HD DVD playback on Xbox One MS would have
to buy or write a new player app, then would have to regression test every time there's a major change that impacts apps. That's a waste of time for a peripheral that was discontinued over five years ago.

It's not like I don't have a small collection (30-50 titles) on HD DVD and two 360 HD DVD drives. Rebuying them on Blu-ray cost me very little.
