Xbox One Gets Windows 10 and Cross Platform features in 2015...

Phil Spencer leads Microsoft Studios and oversees creative teams around the world developing games, entertainment and premium content experiences for Microsoft’s family of devices including Xbox One, Xbox 360, Kinect, Surface, Windows PC and mobile phones.

    -

He does more than just Xbox stuff, so it makes sense for him to be doing a briefing at the conference.

I'm sure Windows 10 will come to the Xbox One. It already runs a modified version of Windows 8.1 as one of its operating systems, which basically handles the dashboard/app stuff.

As for cross-platform features, I highly doubt that will mean games. MS are making it easier for developers to create apps that run across all of devices, so if you write an app it will be much easier to make it run on PC, phone, tablet and console.

  3. We are also unlikely to see apps only being charged for once and then being made available on all platforms running Windows 10.

No way would they be willing to condense three revenue streams into just one.

    Yes.

Question is, will I be able to remote play my XB1 to my PC and Win tablet? I remote play my PS4 via my PS TV and smartphone. Xbox One Gets Windows 10 and Cross Platform features in 2015... :)

Steam is moving towards Linux. There has been a huge increase in games being cross developed for both Win and Linux over the last year. We'll see a Linux based gaming OS pre-installed on PC's in the next year.

It just seems like Microsoft isn't paying attention to the direction things are headed. They could very easily lose the PC gaming market so why they would want to risk an new OS and development hurdles in the second year of a console doesn't seem to make
    much sense.

The reason Gabe Newell got his knickers in a twist about Windows 8 is precisely because MS are headed in the right direction by having a store built into the OS that sells apps and games, which obviously he doesn't like as that competes with his business.
SteamOS is largely pointless IMO and only a tiny minority of PC gamers will use it. Looking at Steam's own stats, over 95% of the people using Steam are Windows users, and that's a bigger market share than it has overall. There's more people using Windows
10 than there are using certain flavours of Linux, lol.

    @Sigma

As it stands today I'll agree with you but if you look 12 months in the future we could see things take a very different direction.

I've been a PC gamer since there have been PC games and even I have rarely used Linux over the years simply because Windows is easier to use. The Steam OS changes that and makes it user friendly. Now add the fact that it's seeing more games developed for
it than ever before, driver support and games are running better on it than in Windows you're giving people a reason to switch.

After what happened with Windows 8 I think most PC gamers will jump ship in a heartbeat and if the casual PC gamers can purchase a PC/laptop pre-installed with the Steam OS then you've basically removed all the current hurdles to making the switch. Developers
apparently believe this to be the case or we wouldn't be seeing the huge jump in games being developed for Linux/Steam OS.

If your numbers are correct (95%), it's only that way because they're isn't a good alternative as it stands today. Microsoft rules the PC gaming market not because we like it but because there aren't many options.

I don't believe that there's a huge number of people that want to move away from Windows. There's a minority that shout loudly about it - nothing more. If you switch to SteamOS, you might get a few extra FPS in some games (it's really not a huge leap), but
it's not an "all purpose" primary OS (the vast majority of people gaming on PC aren't doing so on high end dedicated gaming rigs - even the people with high end rigs aren't just using them for gaming most of the time) and unless devs go back and make compatible
versions of all of the games in your collection as well as making compatible versions of all titles going forwards, it's not even going to be an "all purpose" gaming OS either. It'll be something that a small number of people tinker with and that's it.

I don't think Steam machines are going to make much of a dent in the market, because I don't see who the target market is. Any enthusiast PC gamer can already build a high end rig suited to their needs. I think if anything, your argument about being late
to market applies to Valve, who are going to be making a living room push in 2015. It's just not going to happen IMO.

Apple introduced pay once and use across all devices just recently and even sharing those purchases with up to 5 family members.

MS need to do this, it is not an option anymore.

Windows 8 had that 5 device limit from the beginning, but it was raised to 81 devices last year.

  11. So I can download an app on my iPhone and have it available on my MacBook (if I owned the latter that is)? Could you point me toward that info Rippen because that would come in handy for me and the other.

The problem with the 'shift to linux' is that the people thinking that are assuming that gaming is the only reason people are using a PC. That isn't true in a great deal of cases. Most PC gamers use their PC for other things too.

Linux has come a long way but to think any of the distros reach the ease of use of Windows simply isn't true.

Give it a couple of years and things could very well change. The various distros are making leaps and bounds. At the moment though Windows is obviously the way to go.

Microsoft need to capitalise on the success of the Xbox brand and get that involved with Windows to a greater extent. Linux isn't a threat now but it very much has the potential to be.

Frameworks for both OS X and iOS

The days of wishing an app for your iOS device were available on your Mac — and vice versa — are numbered. Now it will be easier than ever for developers to share more code across the two platforms, while still building customised experiences for each one.

    www.apple.com/.../developer

lets say safari/mail/iMovie/iPhoto and most of the most everyday 1st party apps all work across devices including Mac and more and more as OSX updates.

    You you are welcome

There's been rumors about Titanfall 2 going to Steam circulating lately so that could tie into this somehow.
