    Xbox One (gen one) not reading certain kinds of discs.


    I recently tried to replay metro last light and I noticed the game doesn’t load, neither does NHL 15, Thief, or NHL 17, yet Mad Max, and Elder Scrolls: Online does. I noticed the two that load have laser cut serial bars near the Xbox logo and then a second
    second set above that. Does this mean there’s an issue with a disc type? I can’t tell which is dual layer or single layer or if such exist. I purchased a new copy of NHL 17 and same issue, the disc spins there’s the sound of it being read yet nothing... then
    the disc stops spinning. Is there a specific issue or fix for this? I’m actually incredibly disappointed there’s no documentation on the disc sizes or how to identify certain types. The troubleshooting steps prove usesless and the console doesn’t qualify for
    a warrant repair given it is a Gen1. I’m actively considering switching to the PS4 given that this issue seems to have no resolution and the games I’m seeking to play and want to in the future play are now unaccessible.

    I guess so, I have tried everything except booting the disc from start, I don't think I'll be continuing playing console games after this, I don't have the time, money or effort to continue. anyhoot, been fun Xbox.

    Well you could change the startup choice by choosing to start with the disc in tray option under settings, startup and make your choice from there. This would mean whatever disc is in the tray would boot right into that game when the console is powered on.
    As far as failures while playing the disc, it could be a few things. Make sure the disc is clean and scratch free. Try blowing into the open DVD drive to ensure its not dust collecting on the lens of the laser. Next you could always try to copy the disc onto
    your hdd. Failing that, overall if the fixes don't work it sounds like the disc drive is going out. Which means you can keep trying to copy your games onto your hdd, or start a repair order at www.xbox.com/support. Sounds like since your elite is an earlier
    model your warranty is probably not valid any longer. You can get an out of warranty repair for a fee of $119.99 or just a newer S series starting at MSRP $199.99 + tax for a 4gb model and $299.99 + tax for the 250gb model. Good luck .

    Hello there,

    It sounds like your game has corrupted and probably just needs a reinstall. If its working on other consoles and you can play other games its unlikely to be any hardware faults or the CD itself.

    Can you try going through this guide to see if any of this helps, i would recommend a complete uninstall of the game and reinstall to see if this helps, or clear the local saved data.

    I had three discs from different stores..

    My brother had the same issue.

    The last disc (which wouldn't read on my One X or my original Xbox one) works perfectly fine on my Series X.

    It's not a faulty disc.

    It's older drives and cross gen games.

    My One X played everything else perfectly.

    It's an issue with these cross gen x/s discs..

    Nothing you can say is going to convince me otherwise..

    I take it Blu-Ray disc movies are working okay? Have you tried many of the ones you own? Games are detected?

    Bear in mind that the Xbox One S, One X and the current Series X actually have two lasers, one for reading DVD discs (including Xbox 360 discs) and one for reading Blu-Ray discs, which also includes Xbox games as they are also on BD-Disc.

    If the DVD laser is giving out, it won't read certain DVD discs, and this is likely the reason for the issues you are experiencing. This is also why Blu-Rays and Xbox One games are not effected. There is nothing wrong with your DVD's, it's the console's optical drive that is faulty.

    It actually does. I got the Series X this holiday at $349, and the same disc is working perfectly. I have determined that the Xbox One X disc drive is trying to read Cross Gen discs differently than Xbox One discs. The disc drive on the Series X doesn’t have this issue. You might need a new disc or you might need to send your Series X for maintenance.
