Xbox one games PreOrder codes?

This is the 2nd to a two part question, the other is asked in the correct form section.. i hope. So im a 360 owner without internet and in the past when i got preorder codes from like gamestop, i went to my computer and logged into xbox.com and typed in
the redeemed code which set it up for me to download later. Since i dont have the One just yet and say i get the GREAT Halo: Master Chief Edition from gamestop and the preorder code is there, can i log onto to xbox.com and imput the code there or do i need
to have an xbox one with the game in the unit to install the code? And yes, i know the game isnt out yet but previous xbox one games have come with preorder codes, how did those work?
