Xbox One games on internal (or external) hard drive

Microsoft should allow us customers to install from a game disk to the internal hard drive on the Xbox One.

It was definitely a step backward by forcing people buying the game on disk to keep getting up to put the disk in or swap a disk out to play a game.

    :)

As an idea for xbox one hard drives because they are internal and not external try plugging in an external drive to save or transfer all important games to external hard drive and leave not so important games onto internal drive
that way you can take them anywhere and not have hard drive failures with xbox one.

    Xbox one external hard drive

I am looking at getting an external hard drive for Xbox one, just wondered if you keep games on internal drive and play them do updates and saves stay on internal drive or do they go straight onto external drive also if external
drive does go wrong do you lose games and saves cheers

The reason that they did this was because of the backlash against their DMR policy which would have required an online connection at least once a day but would have let you install games and not use the disc to play.

The game is already installed to the hard drive. That's why it takes a while the first time you want to play. The disc is used not so the console can play the game from it, but to verify ownership of the game. The game is played from the hard drive.

  6. @HyruleBaveline is right, the system was originally designed to be discless, and there was a backlash against DRM policies except that's not the whole story. The games would not only install to the Xbox One (under the original design), but games would also
registered the rights to the game to the user account, much like modern disc PC games register to somebody's Steam account and all the rights to those games are backed up on the Steam account. Much like on Xbox 360 for digital rights, online isn't required
unless someone uses the content on a remote console, or signs on at a friends place to download a game to play there temporarily, you need to be signed into XBL to play those games.

Where the restrictive DRM issue became a problem was reversing policy on used games. See, if a game registers to your account its there for good, you can't go trade it in to GameStop or give it to a friend. You don't even need the disc anymore you can throw
it away as all rights would be tied to your account. However, getting rid of used games was bound to upset a lot of gamers, so they reversed policy too late in development. Problem is, it was designed to be a discless system, so only way to allow for used
games and a discless system was to have all rights being tracked with that always online DRM. It also would have required a convoluted trading system that retailers would have to be willing to going to great lengths to participate in. In the end it was better
just to scrap it, require disc presence as a form of rights verification.

If you want a no disc experience this gen, just buy digital, I've been going that route and I mus say I like it so much more than managing discs. So easy to install, installs in background so I can play other games while they install. Just make sure you
have a decent internet connection (and well maintained home network) as game file sizes this generation are huge. Would also recommend getting a larger external HDD, nothing smaller than 2TB (make sure a USB 3.0, I'd go Western Digital).

Downside of going all digital is Microsoft is horrible about keeping the digital market flexible with pricing, unlike the brick and mortar retail market with constantly fluctuating digital pricing. It would have been nice to get those digital rights through
such a market but instead we're stuck with this dinosaur of a digital pricing system of the Xbox One's digital store. Digital and the elimination of the used game market is also a way to keep revenues going toward publishers. Only problem is, the industry
has yet to make this leap. Given how competitive things are between Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, if one makes that leap its way too advantageous for the others not to. Nevermind though Sony too tried to do away with used game media on plans for PS3 back
in 2005, but reversed decision too in face of backlash. Everybody wants to do it but is too afraid to do it if their competitor's don't.

I think the retailers know about the convenience of not having to use a disk.

Ever take a look at Amazon and see that if you buy the disk you can get $20+ off the price you'd pay for the download? What a racket?!

Are you running it off of the hard drive on the Xbox One or an external one? If you are playing off of the internal drive on the Xbox One then you may want to get an external for it because that is a known issue as far as the Xbox One hard drive and this
    game.

Is this game stored on your Internal Storage or External hard drive? If it's on your External Hard drive kindly move it to your Internal Storage then remove the hard drive. This is to check if it's due to the external hard drive.

XBox One X and external drive

It was confirmed last night that any current external hard drive will work with the Xbox One X, however you may want to consider moving some of the games you play often over to the Xbox One X internal hard drive as it will probably load games quicker from
internal HDD than your external one.
