Xbox One freezes and shuts off when external hard drive plugged in

Western Digital 4tb. It was working fine until the last update. I’ve used it on another console and this console before with no problems.

You can try to reformat it on a different device, if I may ask what is the hard drive that you have?

I can’t because as soon as the hard drive is plugged in and the Xbox recognizes it, the Xbox shuts off

Hi, I hope you're doing great out there despite the issue that you're experiencing. I am an Independent advisor and I am here to help you in regards to your concern.

If the issue is only happening when the external hard drive is plugged in it may mean that the hard drive is corrupted. You may need to reformat the hard drive.

1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide, and then select Profile & system> Settings > System > Storage.

2. Select your device then select Format.

This will delete all games installed on your external hard drive. Once done, kindly perform a powercycle on your console.

1. Turn off your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the console for approximately 10 seconds. The console will turn off. ​​​

2. Turn your console back on by pressing the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox button on your controller. ​​​

Is your console an Xbox 360 or Xbox One ?

Double check if the external hard drive is actually being detected, sometimes the USB connection might be loose. If the external hard drive is not detected, turn off the console

and then double check the USB connector is firmly plugged in, then turn console back on and see if external hard drive appears.

Also another thing to check... some brands of external hard drive have a power light when turned on. Check if the power light is on.
