Xbox One & Fortnite - Game/Console Problems - Crashing/Freezing/Locking Up

Hello.

My son plays Fortnite almost exclusively on XBox One. Ever since Chapter 3 of Fortnite rolled out, his performance on Xbox One has gotten worse and worse. Now with the rollout of Chapter 4, the game is almost completely unplayable on Xbox One. The game locks up, freezes, crashes and often takes the Xbox down with it. This is the only game installed on the Xbox that has this problem.

The only other thing he runs in the background from time to time is Spotify. I'll tell him to shut down Spotify to try and clear the problem up but that's no help. We've done a lot to try and troubleshoot the problem: empty the Xbox cache, deleting and re-installing Fortnite, restart Xbox, factory reset Xbox. There's more as well but it's been a year since I've been trying to clear this problem up and now I can't recall everything we did.

Epic games was no help, they blame Xbox for the problem. Go figure. I'd include a screenshot but I wouldn't know what information anyone would need to see in order to suggest a solution. The Xbox was made in 2017 and the hard drive is currently at 76% capacity so space shouldn't be an issue. Please let me know if there's any information I should have included in order to try and figure out what's happened. Almost everything we do doesn't resolve the problem.

Hello AgentRaygun1124, sorry to hear you're having trouble with the console.

So, if the console was made in 2017 that means you've either got a regular Xbox One or a One X. This may be an issue with the internal drive itself which may need a repair.

However, I do have a couple of things you can try.

1. Do a full reset deleting everythig from the cosole. All games can be redownloaded and his saves are safe on the Cloud. Once done download only Fortnite first and play it to see if there's still problems.

2. Another thing you can try is to get an external USB 3.0 hard drive (up to 16 tb) for extra storage and install the game there to see ifthat helps.

Beyond that you would need to see about a repair. You can set one up via https://account.microsoft.com/devices. Once you've received your shipping label via email you can pack up the console.

Please be sure to send only the console and nothing else as Xbox does not guarantee that extra items such as cables or controllers will be returned.

Does the game tend to crash/freeze/lock-up at the same moment? Or is it sporadic?

Game freezing can be somewhat unpredictable, and hard to resolve (especially in older and BC titles that are outside of the development cycle). Sometimes it's the console that causes the problem, if I get game crashes or freezes I try to power cycle the console
and I usually have a good response with that. Give it a shot!

Yep the game is probably the culprit. My console also randomly freezes sometimes when playing skyrim as well as playing Fallout New vegas. Although New Vegas has locked up my Xbox more. I usually wipe my system cache to fix the problem but it only works
for a short time till it plays up again. I don't own Battlefield 4 nor played it but from what I have heard about it around the web it is also prone to freeze and crash your console. With Bethesda games just be sure to save constantly and don't have to many
saves saved to your console as even that can cause problems.

Any of you folks been having issues with the Beta freezing/locking up your console? I know it's early days yet but had it crash on me twice in last 30 mins or so.
