Xbox one fan sounds like a jet engine

My xbox one console is not even a year old yet (bought it last november).

It has always been super quiet while running, then about a month ago just out of nowhere one day, the fan decided to get REALLY loud. I mean, its about a loud as my vacuum cleaner... have to turn the tv up on full blast just to drown out the fan noise. There
is no particular function that makes it get super loud-- if the console is on, the fan is running at full blast. Playing games, Netflix, anything and everything.

I've done nothing to my console. Haven't dropped it, has plenty of ventilation, etc.

I sent it in for repair but the console was returned to me with a letter stating they "tested it extensively" and it is fine.

I don't like that in order to use my xbox, my living room sounds like an active runway with planes taking off. Especially because it has always been completely silent up to now.

My warranty is up in November and I really wish they would have fixed it.

    Any advice?

    :)

  3. Fans spinning too fast?

It is constant, the sound of a fan constantly running at high speed. It doesn't matter whether it's idle or whether I'm playing a game, the sound level remains the same. Meaning, like a jet engine.

It sounds anti-climactic, but have you tried a power cycle yet? That usually solves unusual system behavior and brings things back to normal.

The way the console is designed is that the fan will kick it to high-gear when the system starts getting hot from the surrounding environment and/or from generating a lot of heat while playing a game.

Some users also report that the fan also gets loud when your hard drive is too full. If that's the case, delete a game (or two) off of the hard drive.

Is your Xbox running Preview firmware (from the Preview Program)? If so, then that may be the cause of your fan troubles, especially if the fan started acting up around the same time you installed Preview firmware.

Thanks for the tips. I tried a power cycle and it made no difference. The fan noise seems even worse now the past few days. The fan starts up the moment I turn on the console; the console is not even on long enough to get hot yet.

Also, no preview program and hard drive is near empty now-- when Microsoft mailed my console back to me, it was wiped clean... haven't downloaded every single thing back onto it yet.

    Hey GatoPajama,

Has this caused any performance issues? The noise described does sound a little odd. The first thing I want to suggest is ensuring your Xbox One console is plugged directly into the wall rather than a surge protector.

If the issue persists, could you possibly share a video of the noise on this thread? You can link us to the video using OneDrive or any other file sharing site.

    Thanks!

No performance issues that I have noticed, the loud fan is just very irritating.

Yes, it is plugged directly into the wall.

I have been doing a bit of research and apparently Microsoft was replacing excessively loud consoles at one point, so they have acknowledged that this is a problem... yet they did not replace mine. I have been trying to contact them but nothing has come
out of it, I just don't want them to drag this out until my warranty expires.

I will upload a video tonight.
