    Xbox One Fan Hum

    Friends,

I purchased my Sunset Overdrive Xbox One on Sunday and am noticing a light hum from the fan.

After the October update, the Xbox One is much quieter, but there is a distinct humming sound from the console that is apparent when the TV is at low volumes or my game is paused.

It does NOT appear to be a reflection of the Power Brick.

Does the console typically make noise? Is this normal? I find it awfully distracting, and would like it resolved!

    :)

  2. Power Brick noise - does it have an internal fan?

I was curious if anybody else is hearing a hum from their power brick? If my power brick is in use or my console is in Instant-On mode (white light on the brick at all times) I hear the hum, if I set my Xbox one to Power Saving mode the Brick has a yellow
light when the console is powered off and the hum goes away.

Does the Brick have an internal fan? When your power brick has the white light on, does it make any noise? Just want to make sure that this is normal, thanks guys. Xbox One Fan Hum :)

    Power brick buzzing

Mine makes a fan noise which could be described as buzzing but I have to go quite close to it to hear it.

The console itself is far louder.

Or are you referring to an electrical hum?

If you can hear a loud electrical hum then it's probably faulty.

    Hey Noob Krusher,

Sadly, what seems to be going on is a problem with your fan. At this point it would be a good idea to see if you can trade your console in from where you bought it, or if that doesn't work, you can send it in for a repair.

    Hope this helps

Should the box be relatively silent?

    Thanks for the help

yeah, it should be relatively silent. It might have a bit of a noise, but not enough to bother you while playing or while on pause

Just out of curiosity, Noob, what kind of surface is your Xbox on? I know I have heard from folks here on the forums who say that makes a HUGE difference - one guy had his resting on a wood shelf, and it made a considerable hum, but by moving it to a more
stable glass surface, it was completely silent. You might take a look at that part of your setup and see what's up!

Hey Jaymo, I will definitely investigate this. It is on a carpet floor. I'll try moving it to a nearby desk and see if the hum/chirping noise stops!

Okay, definitely let us know what happens! Being on carpet, while probably not causing a "surface vibration" hum like I thought, could cause problems for the ventilation system, as the closer a vent fan is to the floor, the more dust and carpet fibers it
will pick up from the carpet, which can clog the fan and occasionally a piece will cause this noise you mention. As a tech specialist with my school district, you wouldn't believe the "insides" I've seen on some PCs. I had an office staff person once whose
PC was doing the "flashing red light" and never powering up. Her tower sat on the floor, and when we opened it up, it LITERALLY had no airspace for ventilation inside - it was a big wall-to-wall cube of dust and hair. The ones up on desks and tables never
have that issue. Needless to say I hit the Germ-X pretty hard that day! Xbox One Fan Hum :)

    Fingers crossed for ya!

Got it! The carpet didn't alleviate the noise issue, but I do feel better about my console sitting elevated rom the ground, now! Thanks for your words of caution.
