    Xbox One external hdd format

Just got a Touro S 1TB usb 3.0 and I can't get my xbox to format it. The xbox will detect it, but just shows it as media storage. I want to format it for games and apps. I'm not seeing any option to format it in settings>manage storage. Am I missing something?

    :)

Have you tried changing the hdd?

Same here, no videos or anything about changing the hard drive. But I guess they'll have an option soon about having an external disc for it.

I'm having the same problem. Same drive as well. Have you tried uninstalling the new media app? I intend to try that when I get off work.

    Hey there CopeDISH!

Sorry to hear about the issue! Let's try plugging your external hard drive into a Windows PC and format it to NTFS. After that, plug it back into the Xbox One and give it a go! Let us know if that helps! Xbox One external hdd format :)

I've formatted the drive on PC and tried every xbox USB port. The xbox detects the drive, but it assumes it's media (music/video) storage. I'm never prompted to format for XB1 as a games/apps drive.

As far as I can tell there is no way to manually initiate the format process (this seems like a big oversight on the dev side). The drive meets all requirements and is listed as a compatible drive on this site.

    Hey there CopeDISH,

Sorry to hear that didn't fix this issue. Is there anyway you could try plugging the hard drive into a different Xbox One console at a friend's house close by? If you could, it would really help us narrow down where the root of the issue is.

Post back and let us know! Xbox One external hdd format :)

    Xbox One external hdd format

Finally got around to checking my apps. I'd assumed that the media player app was included in the update for external storage. However, it is not. I installed the app and was able to format the drive for games.

    @Drew4486

Install the media player app from the store then go to settings>system>manage storage

select the drive and you should now have the option to format it

    External HDD

Yes External HDD support is available. The External HDD must be at least 256GB in size and use USB 3.0. Keep in mind that the External HDD will have to be formatted for use with the Xbox One console.

External hard drive is not detected

    Hi!

You can try formatting the external HDD directly with a PC, then you can connect it to the console and use it. It can happen if an external HDD is not properly formatted.

    I NEED HELP

First let's double check that the external HDD works. Try to connect to a PC. If the PC detects the HDD, format the HDD.

The plug to your console to see it detects the HDD apply the Xbox Format again.

    Hope that works!

    Regards!
