    Xbox One External HD Questions

Hello, I'm thinking of purchasing an external hdd for my Xbox one as I am noticing the space quickly disappear. However I also have a PS4 and would like to buy just one HDD. I am curious if I couldn't just purchase a 4TB HDD and have it partitioned into
two drives. Would that work or would the Xbox keep asking to format the drive?

    :)

  2. External Hardrive

I need to ask a question about using an External Hard drives for Xbox One it says more than 256 GB or higher but what you see in the stores like Game Stop others are 2 GB HD but if you need a 256 GB or higher how can a 2 GB HD work then ?

Second question: during updates do those go to your system HD or to the Default External HD ?

Sorry but the answer to that is no, You will need a separate HDD for each console.

My Ext. Hard Drive shuts my XBONE off/crashes

    Hi AyeYaya,

It sounds that the external HD may have gotten corrupted causing the Xbox One to shutdown since you are able to use the console fine without the external HD plugged in.

Do you happen to have another external HD that meets the requirements for testing purposes? Or would you happen to be able to try that HD on another Xbox?

You may need to delete what you have on there, re-format the HD for the Xbox One, and then download what you had on there again.

Questions regarding the External HD in One!

    Hi there.

Xbox One uses a different file system than Windows, so when you format the drive for use on the Xbox One, it will no longer show up on a Windows machine, at least not in the usual way.

To make your hard drive be recognised by Windows, you need to use Windows Disk Management. If you're using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you can access the Disk manager either via the search function in the Start Menu or from the control panel.
If you're using Windows 8.1 the quickest way you can get to it is by searching for
Administrative Tools or go straight to it by right clicking on the Windows Start Button and selecting Disk Management from there. Or, you can get to via the control panel.

With your external hard drive connected up, Disk Manager should now detect your external hard drive. A Window will pop up asking you to initialise the device.
I'm pretty certain that this procedure will remove the Xbox formatting so proceed with caution.

Note that you can not completely delete files from your hard drive simply by quick formatting the hard drive. The files will still be there, just marked as 'free space'. There are only two ways of deleting a file completely from a mechanical hard drive; either
via filling the hard drive completely with new content or using software on a computer to write random data to all the sectors of the hard disk.
