Xbox ONE- External Drive Problems

Hi There,

I recently got a 5TB Seagate External drive for Xmas which was reformatted within a couple of days.

Yesterday, when turning the xbox on, it would not recognise the drive connected. Instead just displaying the remaining internal storage.

I tried doing a full power down cycle, along with powering the external drive down completely and leaving for 30 seconds minimum. Reconnected the drive and it appeared. However it would not see see anything on the drive and nothing could be written into
the drive. The drive itself sounds like it is stuck in a loop in terms of it spinning up. It has not made this sound before the issue occurred.

I cannot remember if the For Honor Beta was installing onto the drive when the xbox was turned off the day previously (and power was disconnected by accident) this may have caused the issue.

When connecting the drive to a computer it is recognised but when you try and access it, the connection drops off.

I have not tried a new USB 3.0 Cable at this time. I know for a fact it came packaged with a brand new USB 3.0 at Xmas.

What would you suggest in terms of recovering the drive if possible.

Xbox One External Hard Drive Compatibility

Hey, I am looking for an External Hard Drive and recently found an External Drive for a Mac that is a really good price would that work for my Xbox One? Or would it have problems? Thank you in advance for any replies.

If the drive is emitting a repetitive pattern of clicking noises, that is usually a symptom of a dead HDD..

I'd try to see if it's at least able to be detected and reformatted on a Windows PC. If it is able to be detected, reformat it as NTFS (this erases the drive) and set it up again on the Xbox. If it still can't be detected and continues to make repetitive
clicking noises, the drive may have died.

If it's dead, I'd try checking in with any manufacturer's warranty or return policy from the store it was bought from.

Seems to me that it is a problem with either the drive itself or the cable connecting the drive to the console.

If you have another external drive handy, try using the cable from your xbox external drive and see if it can connect to a computer or laptop. If it can, then its more than likely a problem with your external drive.

Alternatively, you could test your external drive on another xbox one console.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to hear that the issue is persistent on the External Hard Drive.

Have you tried connecting the hard drive to a PC?

Does the PC recognize the external hard drive?

Does the external hard drive meet the specifications for the Xbox One?

If the problem persists, I recommend to try a different external hard drive on the Xbox if possible. One thing we want to make sure, Are the ports on the Xbox One functioning?

I am having trouble with my external hard drive on my xbox one and ever since that new update my xbox one wont recognize that my external hard drive is plugged in I have tried the trouble shooting steps and nothing seems to work and my external hard drive
is a 3.0 Toshiba external drive is this problem going to be fixed before its released to the general public because I want to play my games that are saved to that drive can anyone tell me if this problem is even being looked into at all

Have you tried using a different external drive (different brand even) to see if it does the same thing?

It will help to narrow down if it's the drive or the console.

I have and original Xbox One console that doesn't want to use read my external drive, but my One X has no problem with the drive. And it's a newer drive.

There is a possibility that there is either a connection issue with your external hard drive or somehow the external drive is corrupted. One possible solution is to uninstall the game and then reinstall the game. Try installing the game on only the internal Xbox hard drive to see if that fixes the problem. Also, try launching other games on your external hard drive to see if how those games are functioning normally.
