Xbox One External Drive Not Recognized

After a recent Xbox One S update which occurred on 09/27/2021, my Seagate 5TB external "media" drive is no longer recognized by the media players apps on my Xbox One S. The console sees the drive when initially plugged in to one of the USB ports and asks if it is to be used as a gaming drive or media drive. After selecting media drive, it does not show up in the Media Player or VLC apps.

When the issue started, I thought it could be a drive issue; however, the drive was still readable by my Windows 10 PC. Just to be sure, I purchased a Western Digital Black 5TB external drive, a drive that was highly recommended on Microsoft and several other online forums. I copied several of my media files (mp3 and mp4) to the new drive hoping that it would fix the issue and it didn't. Since there is clearly no issue with the two 5TB drives, I connected an older Seagate 1TB media drive to the console and it worked as expected.

Another of my family members has the same issue with his Xbox One S console after the update as well. At this point, I assume that there is a bug in the latest software update that has caused larger drives to not be recognized by the system. I can only assume that Microsoft is working on a patch to fix this issue so that I, and others, can go back to using our Xbox consoles as a full home entertainment solution.

FYI, the current revision of my console OS and shell are listed below:

    OS Version: 10.0.22000.2285 (xb_flt_2109co.210920-1845)

    Shell Version: 2109.0.2109.10003

    :)

Perhaps your child's external hard drive is not working. Is your child's external hard drive recognized by the Xbox One? Does it turn on any lights?

    Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to hear that the issue is persistent on the External Hard Drive.

Have you tried connecting the hard drive to a PC?

Does the PC recognize the external hard drive?

Does the external hard drive meet the specifications for the Xbox One?

If the problem persists, I recommend to try a different external hard drive on the Xbox if possible. One thing we want to make sure, Are the ports on the Xbox One functioning?

    Let us know.
