Xbox One doesn't recognize external HDD anymore.

xbox report dat, what hard drive do you have? My boys need more memory and I need to find out what is compatible and then what works best of those that are compatible. How much did it cost you too? I saw somewhere where someone even hooked up their ipod
for additional memory? What are the options?

Await Damnation i have a seagate 2TB expansion hard drive, cost 90euro, got it from PC world and i havent had any trouble with it, a friend of mine uses a western digital my passport 2TB hard drive and he has no problems with it, i also have a 1TB version
of the passport and i did have a few issues with it but after the last update its worked perfect with xbox aswell, i dont know about any other brands but i would recommend either seagate or western digital hard drives as they seem to work well with the xbox

Hmmmm I have a 2tb Toshiba USB 3.0 drive and I am having the same issue since this morning. I seriously dont want to bother formatting and redownloading and installing around 500gb of data. If I do I think I will likely sell my xbox because to be honest
apart from MCC and Sleeping Dogs definitive edition nothing this generation has really floated my boat just yet, although Fallout 4 may change that!

Hi. Have you tried running CHKDSK on your external hard drive connected to you PC? I have found this to work many times now.

I already marked the thread as answered. If anyone else is having this problem just do as the verified answer says and you should be fine... not sure why people don't read the thread before replying. Laziness is abundant on this forum.

I started having issues with my HDD today as well. I truly hope I dont have to lose my data.

Another solution is to transfer your data to another hard drive, the Xbox can do this while your still playing so it won't affect your game time, if you don't have another hard drive then your back to option one.

If you do only have one hard drive don't you think that reformating it and reinstalling your games etc though it would take some time would be worth it in the long run if it solves the problem

There's nothing lazy about wanting to know what's caused the problem if its going to take a shed load of time to redownload everything. The problem should never have occurred in the first place really. The xbox downloaded an update of some description friday
night (it must have because its the only time I have to switch it on manually, every other day I use kinnect) and it must be due to that that it is unrecognisable. As I stated I don't really fancy reformatting if Microsoft are going to rectify this issue with
the next update.

Sometimes external HDD die, have you tried connecting the drive to your PC to see if it can recognize it? If the PC doesn't see it too then it's probably the external storage that is faulty.

Is the external drive not being recognized by your Xbox? PC? Its possible the external HDD may need to be replaced...

If I understand you correctly, the Toshiba USB 3.0 external HDD had been working with your Xbox One for sometime with no problems? That now the Xbox refuses to recognize that the external HDD is plugged into the USB port? And, when the external HDD is plugged
into the Xbox, the controller and WiFi stop working? Then, if you haven't already done so, may I recommend that you follow the steps outlined in "Troubleshoot
external storage detection on Xbox One" . If the Xbox still does not recognize the external HDD, and given everything else that's going on, I would suggest doing "How
to reset your console to factory defaults on Xbox One" . If that fails to get your Xbox and Toshiba USB 3.0 working together again with no other problems, then things have moved into a more difficult area of troubleshooting. You can try testing your external
HDD on another Xbox One. But, if that doesn't work then we have to assume that the games/data on that drive, for all practical purposes are unusable. At which point you have two options, 1) use a Windows PC and Disk Management to "Create
and format a hard disk partition" with NTFS on your Toshiba USB 3.0 external HDD, 2) or simply buy a new replace USB external HDD. and just download and re-install your games and apps again. However, if your Xbox continues to fail to recognize any USB
external HDD then unfortunately you may need to send it in for "Device repair" . But, lets hope it doesn't come to that. Regardless, please let us know what happens.

I got the 0x80820005 error with the Seagate Expansion 4TB as well. I have rebooted my Xbox One multiple times. I have unplugged and replugged the USB 3.0 cable into one USB port, and then the other.

Originally, I was receiving that error code with the accompanying message. Now there is no response from the Xbox One at all. The light comes on and I hear the disc spinning in my external HDD. When I tried plugging it into my laptop instead, my laptop initially
recognized it and now doesn't. Is it possible that the Xbox One is reformatting the external HDD without telling me?

Okay a little confusing but here's how it works. When any External Device be it a HDD or Flash Drive is used as a Storage Device (Memory for the Xbox 360), the Xbox 360 will only recognize it as such (a Storage Device) via the
USB. In short, a really huge External HDD becomes a 16Gb (Max) Storage Device from USB.

Some Games and some Features of Xbox LIVE require an Official MS Xbox 360 HDD that is for that particular Xbox 360 Console (ie Slim with Slim HDD). Simply using an External HDD will not work for these cases. Any External Storage Device is meant to supplement,
not replace an Official HDD or the performance of one that some Games and Features require.
