Xbox One doesn't recognize external HDD anymore.

Title says most of it. I have a WD My Book 4tb, yes, USB 3.0, that has worked great with absolutely no problems for months.

I went away on a trip for 4 days, came back, and now it randomly doesn't work.

I've tried:

Hard reset

reset and disconnect HDD

all USB ports on Xbox

other USB 3.0 cable

All to no avail. Now I'm back to 90.5% left on my Xbox with 10 games uninstalled that are actually on my external HDD.

Any ideas?

Problem with External HDD

I gave my external hdd to one of my friend to copy a game for me but after i get it form him when i connect it to my xbox one it doesn't show all of my games. for example when i select manage on a game that i have it in my internal it shows that its in both
of them (which is correct) but it doesnt show it when i switch internal to external HDD. by the way when i copy my external hdd games to my internal (Copy, NOT MOVING) it doesn't show that game in my external hdd anymore.

If I understand you correctly, the Toshiba USB 3.0 external HDD had been working with your Xbox One for sometime with no problems? That now the Xbox refuses to recognize that the external HDD is plugged into the USB port? And, when the external HDD is plugged
into the Xbox, the controller and WiFi stop working? Then, if you haven't already done so, may I recommend that you follow the steps outlined in "Troubleshoot
external storage detection on Xbox One" . If the Xbox still does not recognize the external HDD, and given everything else that's going on, I would suggest doing "How
to reset your console to factory defaults on Xbox One" . If that fails to get your Xbox and Toshiba USB 3.0 working together again with no other problems, then things have moved into a more difficult area of troubleshooting. You can try testing your external
HDD on another Xbox One. But, if that doesn't work then we have to assume that the games/data on that drive, for all practical purposes are unusable. At which point you have two options, 1) use a Windows PC and Disk Management to "Create
and format a hard disk partition" with NTFS on your Toshiba USB 3.0 external HDD, 2) or simply buy a new replace USB external HDD. and just download and re-install your games and apps again. However, if your Xbox continues to fail to recognize any USB
external HDD then unfortunately you may need to send it in for "Device repair" . But, lets hope it doesn't come to that. Regardless, please let us know what happens.

Forgot to mention: The external HDD blinks when connected to the Xbox so it does see a conmection.

 

hi brownbob06, i have a similar setup to yourself with the external hard drive, ive never had any issues with it (thank god). but i know hat your talking about, there is a friend of mine that has had basically the same issue as yourself with the external
hard drive so your not alone (his gamer-tag is CriMsoN 7ypHooN)

i know this doesnt help you but if microsoft actually look at this thread at least they will know its an issue for more than one person and that it has to be looked at.

 

Yeah, I'll be trying another cable if I get a chance to pick one up tomorrow. Hopefully that's the problem as these 500GB HDDs they put in the system and the enforcement of mandatory disk installs really puts people like me (you know, Microsoft's core dographic,
the 20 something gamer who spends a lot of his money on games) in a terrible spot. It takes me a full day to download a triple A game. I'm going to be *** if I have to redownload my games. And much more ***, like PS4 convert type ***, if I have to constantly
pick and choose which games I want installed on my system because it only holds ~15 games at a time.

 

Sorry, just a bit frustrated. It seems like ever since I got my Xbox One I spend more time troubleshooting problems or waiting for friends to be able to join lobbies than actually playing. Blah, at least Netflix still works well.

 

just out of curiosity what size is your HDD??

 

4TB external 500GB internal.

 

ahh right, ive a 2TB external, most people i know with the same have no issues, most people i speak th that do have issues have 1TB or 3TB etc...

if i remember correctly the microsoft external HDD you can get for the xbox is a 2TB, its like they tried it out for that specific size of HDD and as long as theirs works to hell with the rest sorta thing.

 

i just had a close look through the manual of mine, even though it isnt microsoft they did have a part in its development/manufacturing

now im convinced that as long as their own stuff is compatible they dont care

 

Just an update: I ordered 2 brand new USB 3.0 cables. neither of which works. Looks like I'm going to have to plug it into my PC and see if I can format it so it can be reflrmatted for Xbox One.

 

For anyone else with this problem:

I ended up having to plug the external drive into my PC, initialize the drive through disk management, format it, then hook it back up to my Xbox and restart all over again.

 

I am having similiar issues with USB 3.0 HDD support from Xbone.

The system software (i.e. latest May 2015 update) still does not resolve the

constant not able to move games or apps to it although it formattted fine with Xbone.

Macs and PCs work fine with the USB 3.0 HDD.

Anyways, lots of DRM issues from my experience.

 

I haven't had any DRM issues of any kind.... Don't know anybody that has to be honest.

My external HDD works exactly as it should and always did up until the Xbox One randomly wouldn't detect it one day. Once I got the Xbox to detect it and reformat it my problems were gone.

It sounds like you have completely different issues than what I had.
