Xbox One doesnt find my external hard drive any longer.

I bought an external 5TB hard drive on tuesday (not even a week ago) and got it connected to the xbox one and installed. Since then i bought diablo 3 which downloaded onto the new drive.

Today when i started the system i couldnt start diablo so i checked storage in settings and it didnt show my external drive any longer.

I have tried reconnecting it, hard-resetting the xbox, plug it into a new usb port but still no luck.

I also started having trouble logging into destiny and i am worried it might have downloaded an update onto the external drive that it can no longer access and wont let me into the game.

As long as the external hard drive meets the external storage requirements of the Xbox One then yes you can.

For an external storage drive to save games and apps from Xbox One, it must meet the following requirements:

It uses a USB 3.0 connection. If you’re using a USB hub, the hub must also be USB 3.0 or later.

It has 256 GB or larger storage capacity.

It has a partition. Typically, drives come with a preformatted partition. For more information about partitioning an external hard drive, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

So i contacted xbox support chat and got the advice to backup my save data and reformat the drive. The only problem is a pc cant read the file system on an xbox formated drive so backup is not possible.

Anyway, i went ahead and connected it to my laptop and reformated it, i assume losing all my save data in diablo 3 in the process, and then connected it to the xbox one again. Now it works fine again, but i am worried this will just keep happening.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? As stated above, support wasnt any help and didnt even seem that knowledgeable in this particular problem.

 

i had this happen to me three months ago but never got the advice you did , i went and bought a new 2tb hdd and haven't had a problem since , but thanks for the info because the hdd that had the issue for me was new and working for a couple of months , it's
been sitting in a draw ever since , good to know it's not scrap, fingures crossed for you and sorry i couldn't be more helpful

Sorry about this experience. Keep in mind while many hard drives will work on the Xbox One, not all will perform to our level of expectation and/or requirements of the system.

Always start here with external HD problems:

Help the Xbox Team with some details:

-What specific hard drive are you using?

-What other games or apps were not found?

-Was this HD set as the primary HD?

-Are you using this "one" drive for games, apps and saves only? (just to make sure you didn't accidentally select this drive to be used like a "Media App" external HD)

-Is the drive being moved around (making sure its firmly connected and not moved to slightly loose its connection)?

Other info:

-(regarding the save files) reformatting the hard drive should not cause anyone to loose progress unless you're not synced to the xbox cloud as all saves are backed up there. If you format the drive before it can sync to the cloud, this could cause you to
loose recent progress but not all progress.

 

After the initial problem i have not had any more. I have the harddrive set to be always on, not sure if that is necessary/good though.
