  1. XBOX ONE DLC Inconsistencies with File Sizes and Bandwidth Usage.

    Hey All,

I have already raised this issue with XBOX support via online chat June 3rd with "Cris Jordan" and over the phone with Nikki on June 4th - reference number [mod removed].

I have an XBOX One, an active XBOX Live Gold membership, and the Season Pass for Call of Duty Ghosts. On Tuesday, June 3rd, I turned on my XBOX One in the morning before I left for work. The console was connected via a wired connection to my in-home broadband.
When I turned on my console, I was greeted with the recent console update, which I proceeded to install, and my console restarted. Then I launched Call of Duty Ghosts, where I was then greeted with a message stating that in order to play this game, while being
logged in to XBOX Live, I had to download a title update. The screen gave me the message with a warning that the download was a very large file size (in excess of 2.7 GB) and that proceeding to download the file might result in premium connection charges from
my ISP. I had the option to accept or decline, I chose to accept. The following screen had the item I was downloading, the total file size, and a progress bar with a percentage indicating how far along the DOWNLOAD was. After that downloaded, my console restarted
and I relaunched Call of Duty Ghosts. I proceeded to log back in to my XBOX Live account. I then went to the store via the in-game menu in Call of Duty Ghosts. I then selected the new map pack for download - and again, I was greeted with a warning prompt,
with the option to accept or decline (I accepted), that I was about to download a very large file, and that connection premium connection charges may apply for using so much bandwidth for that download. The following screen was, again, the item I was downloading,
the total file size, and a progress bar with a percentage indicating how far along the DOWNLOAD was. I then watched it download - and I left for work.

After I got off work, I turned my XBOX One back on, logged into my XBOX Live account, and launched Call of Duty Ghosts. I went to load multiplayer, but I noticed that the playlist option for cycling only through the new maps was not an option on my screen.
I hit my home button and went to the 'MY GAME & APPS' screen. I saw my Call of Duty Ghosts Map Pack DLC in the 'Queuing' section. I selected it and it said that I still had to INSTALL my DLC in order to use it. I selected it and I was immediately and subsequently
taken to a progress bar over the Call of Duty Ghosts Game Icon with the word "Installing" accompanied by a percentage. I went to the kitchen to have an after work snack and to kill time during the install. After that reached completion, I relaunched Call of
Duty Ghosts, and was able to happily play the new maps.

Here is where my issue lies. While I do have an in-home Broadband DSL connection with an unlimited Bandwidth Quota, and the speed rating is a modest 5 MBPS download, the Ping is painfully slow at 150-200 milliseconds. So while my in-home broadband is great
for file downloads, it is torture when playing first person shooters - Call of Duty especially. I have a work-around for this issue. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 through Verizon Wireless. My plan gives me unlimited Talk & Text and 10 GB of Data per month
    - with an optional HOT-SPOT feature. I use this HOT-SPOT to connect my XBOX One to the internet, but only when I want to play Call of Duty Ghosts on a bearable connection (20-60 millisecond ping). I have been doing this for about 6 months now and the XBOX
One is the only device in my house paired to the secure HOT-SPOT connection. Of course when I first tried this, I started slow: Noting what my data count was before playing online, playing for about an hour, and then counting out how much data I had used.
I have it worked out that I use about 60-100MB per 90 minutes of online multiplayer action.

So, when I got home from work on June 3rd, my XBOX One was initially connected to my in-home Broadband DSL connection. I then checked to see the progress of the map pack download and saw that it had reached completion. I then switched my internet connection
and began to run my XBOX One on my HOT-SPOT. I launched Call of Duty Ghosts, tried to play the new DLC playlist, but saw that I did not yet have the option. This is where I checked my 'MY GAME & APPS' screen to see that it was now telling me to install my
DLC. I selected the install option and was immediately taken to a progress bar over the Call of Duty Ghosts Game Icon with the word "Installing" accompanied by a percentage. I went to the kitchen to grab a snack while the install took place. I then was able
to relaunch Call of Duty Ghosts and play the new DLC exclusive playlist. I then played for about 60 minutes before I decided to switch to Netflix to watch Top Gear. I went to my home screen, immediately disengaged my HOT-SPOT on my phone and reconnected the
hardline LAN connection into the back of my XBOX One. I then launched Netflix from my in-home broadband DSL connection. I then, like I always do, proceeded to check my data counter on my phone. Now, before I started I refreshed my data-counter to give me a
to-the-minute accurate read and I was at 7.2 GB out of 10 GB before I even connected my XBOX One to play Call of Duty Ghosts online multiplayer. After I started to watch Top Gear on Netflix via my in-home broadband DSL connection, I then refreshed my data-counter
app (It's Verizon's official app) and was shocked to see that I was over 12.6 GB of Data!

It was too late for me to call Verizon, so I contacted XBOX Live support via chat (where I talked to a 'Cris Jordan') - he indicated to me that by selecting 'Install' I had agreed to install the DLC, which required downloading an installer, which was then authorized
to download whatever it needed in order to properly install the new map packs. I was livid. In all of my past experiences with DLC on the XBOX One, across multiple games and content types (Cars on Forza, Maps on Titan Fall, and previous Maps on Call of Duty
Ghosts), I have ALWAYS been warned when I was about to download any sort of large file (usually in excess of 1GB) - and the cause for the warning was that it EXPLICITLY mentions extra incurred costs because of the size of the DLC. I then called Verizon the
next day, June 4th, and I told them of my issue. They were able to verify that I had used roughly 6 GB's of Data late on June 3rd - the source of which was my HOT-SPOT. I then decided to call XBOX Live Support on the afternoon of June 4th; where I had a lengthy
conversation with Nikki. As soon as I mentioned Hot-Spot, she then told me there was nothing she could do because they are not responsible for troubleshooting HOT-SPOT issues. I told her why that was wrong - because it had nothing to do with my HOT-SPOT.
She had difficulty understanding what I meant. I had to explain it to her a few times more before she understood my predicament (But I still feel as if she was not comprehending my issue). She kept insisting that it was my fault, because the XBOX One is made
to hook up to an In-Home Broadband Connection - not via a Hot-Spot - because "the XBOX One is not meant to operate on a network connection with data quotas" (Which is false, the XBOX Live website only mentions that 4G connections may have lag). She said that
the DLC would download and keep downloading through the install. Ultimately she gave me a reference number and referred me to these forums.

Here is where I got upset. The XBOX One, in this case, misrepresented what it was doing when I selected an option. The XBOX One lulled me in to a false sense of security by previously telling me that I was about to download a large file, specifically because
extra charges may apply. If, as Nikki said, data quotas are never part of the XBOX One equation, then this oddly specific notice should not exist for the reason it states. When I selected the 'Install' option, not once was there even a mention or indication
that there would be any sort of DOWNLOADING. Why does the XBOX One provide a progress bar and a percentage when I go to acquire a DLC, if that does not even reflect the progress of the total file size of the DLC? Why does the Download notice mention extra
charges for data downloads if the XBOX One is not designed to run on a 4G HOT-SPOT connection? Why is there no mention that the term "Installing" can include extra downloads? I am furious because I am now 3 GB's over my monthly data allowance with Verizon,
at a cost of $20/GB, for a total of $60. Additionally, I am scared to connect my XBOX One to my HOT-SPOT on my phone because I cannot afford a $60 cost every time I want to play Call of Duty Ghosts. Furthermore, why is there no EXPLICIT mention that the XBOX
One can download huge data packets without my consent? I have been an XBOX Owner and an XBOX Live Subscriber, in one way or another, for the past Decade. I am extremely disappointed with this development. I want this specific technical issue to be addressed:
What is the official position of XBOX LIVE concerning the use of 4G DATA HOT-SPOT? I want the XBOX One OS to be updated to notify the user EVERYTIME a file greater than 100MB is downloaded. I want to know what EXACTLY is happening behind the curtain when my
console tells me something is either 'DOWNLOADING' or 'INSTALLING' - and I want any progress bars to be explicitly descriptive as to what they are alluding to. Lastly, I would like to be compensated for the not-budgeted-for $60 I will be out on my next phone
bill. Please do not let me down XBOX Live Support.

    Thanks,

    :)

    Download Sizes

Go to My Games & Apps > Games and highlight Evil Within, press Menu on it (equivalent of 360's Start) and select Manage Game. That will show you the total file size.

To see how much bandwidth the console is using, go to Settings>Network>Bandwidth Usage and from those two bits of information you should find what you're looking for.

Let us know how you get on.

would it be possible for me to use the Borderlands 2 add-on disc if I put it in my Xbox One S? I am a huge fan of the game, and I miss playing as Gaige.... I tried both discs, but they each send me to the game screen and tell me to start, so I don't know
what to do... Please help me.

    Bandwith/Total Usage this period

Very interesting unless a recent update is no longer counting that as bandwidth usage on the Xbox One, and I'm not finding anything particularly detailing a change in Bandwidth counting.

    What is this?!?!

    Hey LadyJadey,

Thanks for posting, and sorry to see the high bandwidth usage! Has your Xbox One's data usage looked accurate after 5/31? This may have been a visual bug, and your Xbox One console most likely has not reached anywhere near 3,600 TB of data usage. The most
reliable tool to check internet usage will be through your ISP. Any bandwidth usage your Xbox One console actually uses will reflect on the ISP side. I would not worry about your Xbox One console using that much data unless your ISP is reflecting the same
    amount of usage.

Hope this helps clear up the issue!
