Xbox One Display Distorted

It could be the GPU or possibly the connection, but I'd sooner say the GPU.

You may be able to claim warranty or send it into for repair.

Do you have the Xbox One X plugged into a surge protector? Issues like this have been known to be caused by power outages while plugged into a third party surge protector. The Xbox's power supply has a built in surge protector but having it plugged into
another can reduce the effectiveness of the surge protector and cause a malfunction in the software in the event of power complications in your area.

Next thing to do is try another TV with the same cable, and eventually you may need to get another high speed 4K capable HDMI cable and try it on the TV having issues. This will help with isolating the issue to either the console or cable since you said
the TV works fine not using the Xbox.

Since half of your screen is still visible, you may be able to try a
soft factory reset just to see if resetting the operating system will have any effect. If you're able to isolate the issue to the console, then you will need to register and set it up for a repair as suggested by LtLogicon. Here is the repair link to help

Sorry to hear about the display issue, but glad to hear it's fixed. I just want to mention that it's not possible to move save files from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One using a USB drive. You'll need to move the save files into the cloud on Xbox 360. Then
when you try to play the game on Xbox One through Backward compatibility, they will automatically download for you.

UPDATE: I left it alone for the day and the next day it is working fine.

You should also check out this other semi-general thread another user posted some time ago with a similar problem. Except in place grey image distortion their problem was blue image distortion.

Another good thing to consider and try would be by putting your TV on cable or some other video settings like hooking up a DVD/Blu-Ray player to the TV and see if you experience the grey image distortion in those media styles as well. If you do, consider
editing you TV's picture settings manually by resetting things like brightness, sharpness, and saturation in your TV's settings.

There's also an Xbox Support display troubleshooter you may find handy if the other link and suggestion doesn't aid in solving the problem.
