Xbox one Disc Drive Issue

OK- very frustrated here. I have a console which was a gift that has had some issues since I received it. Like may other users I kept waiting for the system update that addresses the disc "glitch". At first it would read discs, then only sometimes and now
not at all and is accompanied by a bit of a grinding. I went through all the troubleshooting just to be a good sport while on the phone with tech support and according to the serial number my warranty was up in January. Not only has this console had very
little use on account of it being more work than it is worth to try to get one running, but I understood that part of the reason I spent 20-30 min installing games was so the disc drive wouldn't need to be accessed constantly. I don't think it is unfair to
expect a $500-$600 product to work as expected and be reasonably durable for it's intended purpose.

Now I was told I would need to send it away for repair and that it would carry a cost of $135 -approximately a quarter of the cost of the unit to begin with to fix a known issue with any number of articles written about it. To further build on the frustration,
I politely asked my support agent what my options were if I wanted to escalate my claim, understanding there was nothing more she could do for me. I was told that there was nobody else I could be in touch with and to maybe try the forums. Now without intending
to slander Microsoft, I suppose my issue here is this is the second generation of console with known issue from launch (RROD) that I have paid for and had to negotiate to try and get some resemblance of value for the money spent.

I am not looking for something for nothing here, I have invested heavily in Microsoft products- it just doesn't sit right with me to spend more money on this given the experience up to this point.

Microsoft giving free digital games for users with broken disc drives

Well, Microsoft is doing something at least. This is a great compensation for the new Xbox One owners out there still having the disc drive issues. Now at least with the free game choices (like Dead Rising 3 --- yes!) they should have something to occupy their time while the disc drive problem gets the solution.

I have a launch one and my drive is giving me massive problems. Just like my original Xbox and my 360.

Honestly Microsoft it’s emberrasing that every Xbox console has had disc drive issues.

 

Hey there, JELLYBIB! The issue you mention with the disc driver noise is only able to be resolved with a repair. If you were initially receiving an error when discs were being read, the only way that issue is resolved is also with a repair.

While it was advertised that any console with a noise would be replaced, we replaced them by following our normal repair processes; those within warranty receive a free repair, those outside of warranty need to pay the out of warranty fee. The red light
issue for the Xbox 360 received an extended warranty for replacement for up to 3 years. If you were outside of that warranty period, you would have had to pay for a repair for a 360 as well.
