Xbox One Disc Drive Grinding, Not Reading!

    Hello.

I am not normally one to complain but my Xbox One which my partner worked hard to buy for me has now officially broke.

He purchased the console back in December 2013, everything was great, no problems…until January 2015 (last month). The disc drive all of sudden didn't read discs and was making really loud grinding noises. It can be very
temperamental. It took me 16 times turning it on and off, rebooting, unplugging until it suddenly started to work again, but I wonder how long until it stops reading again.

I spoke to a Xbox advisor on chat yesterday, and was told I could not purchase the additional 3 year warranty as it can only be purchased between 45 days after the warranty has ran out, which i found to be absolutely disgusting!
So the only way it can be sorted is to get it repaired which costs around £100 i believe or buy a new console and this time purchase warranty. I am absolutely disgusted and upset in the way they treat their customers. I spoke to some of my xbox live friends
last night and not 1 of the friends I spoke to knew about the additional warranty having a time scale. So it looks like I'm not the only one which has a Xbox One which is basically useless and worthless. What i don't understand is why wasn't this problem sorted
before releasing the console, and why was myself and a lot of people not told about the warranty time scale. I had to break the news to my partner about the Xbox he bought for me and he was totally gobsmacked in the fact that there was no chance in getting
it covered. His money has literally been wasted, and I can't but help but feel upset and sorry for him, it was a christmas gift from him to me and now theres no chance in getting it fixed without splashing more money…money that we don't have. Xbox One Disc Drive Grinding, Not Reading! :(

I myself have been an Xbox owner right from when the first one was released, and an Xbox live owner since 2006\2007, in the countless amount of years i have been with Xbox I have never felt so cheated and disgusted in
their service. They cheat people out of their hard earned money and only think about themselves,I thought I would never say this but I am literally considering leaving Microsoft and going to the dark side (Playstation). I feel like I will be letting them win
if i purchase a new console or getting it repaired, so I was wondering if anyone knew a suitable address where I can send a complaint letter to the head office. It's worth a try i guess, if nothing gets sorted then I am going to consider taking this to BBC
Watchdog, people need to be told about this, as its really unfair.

All i can find is email addresses, and phone numbers but a letter normally is the best way to go about it. If anyone knows an address, preferably based in the UK i would really appreciate it. Let me know if you are also
currently experiencing this problem, id love to know how many other people are also currently going through the same situation as me. Many thanks Xbox One Disc Drive Grinding, Not Reading! :)

p.s: Sorry for the wall of text and complaining lol, I'm not a happy bunny!

    :)

Disc drives malfunctioning in Xbox One units

I just read an article that says Microsoft is acknowledging faulty disc drives in some Xbox One units. Some people are having a problem with the drive making a grinding noise and not reading the disc, so if you have this problem, you're not alone!

  3. CD Drive Noise?

You'll never have a 100% silent disc drive when it is reading data from the disc. As long as it is still reading/detecting the disc fine and not a loud grinding noise, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hmm, a clicking noise...could be the hard drive.

    Hole2TheHead,

I'm really sorry to hear that you're having to deal with this issue. Unfortunately the grinding noise/not reading of disks was an issue that was discovered after the launch of the Xbox One when thousands of people tried the console out.

First off, how long have you had the console? Microsoft offers a one-year warranty when purchasing the console through an authorized retailer. (Here is a link to the warranty information:

    support.xbox.com/.../console-kinect-warranty
    )

Secondly, here is a link to a video with one possible solution to your problem:

This method involves hitting your xbox firmly a few times, so if you're not willing to do that then I wouldn't recommend it. However, since it sounds like you really want to get it to work then I would go ahead and try it.

Thirdly, here is the address to Xbox's corporate headquarters:

    One Microsoft Way

    Redmond, Washington 98052-7329 USA

You may also try tweeting at Larry Hryb on twitter (@majornelson), he is a major spokesperson and member for Xbox. Another person you can try to tweet at is Eric Neustadter (@thevowel), he is the operations manager for Xbox Live.

Hopefully you can get this figured out and get your xbox working again. If not, then hopefully one of the ways of contacting microsoft/xbox will bring the issue to their attention and they will work with you.

Again, i'm sorry that you are having to deal with this problem.

I was unaware of this. That is downright awful to say the least. There should be no time limit on when you purchase the warranty. I'm sick fed up of Microsoft and Xbox frankly. Like yourself my partner bought me the Xbox One as a Christmas present in
2013 and I had the same problem with the disc drive, would have to eject and re-insert at least 1/2 dozen times before it would recognise the disc, things got progressively worse until November 2014 where a disc actually got jammed in the console and I could
not eject it. I sent it off for repair (under warranty) and received a "new" console as a replacement. The "new" one worked for exactly 7 days and then started shutting down unexpectedly, submitted a repair request, sent it off, received it back and the
exact same thing happened again so I question what "repair" had been done. Was then suggested to me that it could be a power supply issue so sent off the power brick and received a new one back, console worked for 4 days before the same thing happened YET
AGAIN!! I ended up purchasing a new console last weekend as I've been a month without a working console and guess what, the new console has a disc drive issue, the disc drive hasn't worked since I set the console up. Thankfully I've got the luxury of taking
it back to the shop, you don't have that luxury unfortunately. So far we have spent £870 on 2 consoles which do not work, it is an absolute disgrace that a company the size of Microsoft is treating their loyal customers like this. Hope you get some resolution
