    Xbox One data usage

We're having trouble with data usage on an XBox One.

Mine is not a problem. I look at my daily usage from my ISP and showing in the 5-15GB per day for total home usage. I use Xbox to stream Netflix and game on it. Other than that, I use it for general phone/tablet use, but that's not much.

My friend shows about the same usage, but uses AppleTV for streaming. Stays in the 5-15GB per day usage. However, when her son is with her and using his Xbox, usage skyrockets. There is one day where 124GB used in one day. But generally, any day he is
there and Xbox has internet access, household consumption is minimum 40GB but usually more like 50-80GB per day. There are very obvious spikes in the daily usage chart.

So, I assume it's a configuration issue with his machine. Mine is set to defaults and I've never had a problem. He games...does a lot of Destiny and does play online, but I don't think online play should consume data that significantly, should it? I personally
don't play online much. He says he's not downloading games, but even Destiny 2 is only about 35GB. That 124GB day would be like DLing D2 like 3.5 times. Just doesn't make sense.

We're all frustrated because we can't pin down what's causing the issue. The ISP splits up download and upload by day. There very minimal upload, so I don't think he's accidentally streaming or anything. On the 124GB day, the upload total was 1GB (still
    quite a bit).

I can't believe game patches are taking so much data. He only has a 1TB drive, and I think he only has 5-6 games actually installed, so even if he's only connected one day per week, I can't imagine he's having to pull 50GB of patches.

The only culprit I can suspect is playing Destiny online with friends (with comms), as that is his most common activity. Is it possible that it uses that much data? Does anyone have any other idea what could possibly be causing the issue?

I really appreciate any advice or information anyone can provide.

    :)

    What is this?!?!

    Hey LadyJadey,

Thanks for posting, and sorry to see the high bandwidth usage! Has your Xbox One's data usage looked accurate after 5/31? This may have been a visual bug, and your Xbox One console most likely has not reached anywhere near 3,600 TB of data usage. The most
reliable tool to check internet usage will be through your ISP. Any bandwidth usage your Xbox One console actually uses will reflect on the ISP side. I would not worry about your Xbox One console using that much data unless your ISP is reflecting the same
    amount of usage.

Hope this helps clear up the issue!

support have said, you cannot check your data usage on xbox1, if you can check data usage on windows, surely it would be quite easy for Microsoft to include this function in xbox, at least one can budget ones data

  4. Xbox One data usage

It is not recommended to use Xbox Live over a capped internet connection (limited bandwidth per month, data allowances, etc). I assume this is your case over the concern for data usage. Regardless, Xbox Live overall is heavy on data.

Destiny is a multiplayer/online-only game, so it is expected that playing will involve plenty of downloading and uploading (1GB/hour can be typical).

Games are also constantly updated with new features and bug patches, so each update can be quite large, ranging from several hundred MB to a few GB. This situation can worsen as there's more installed games, as the Xbox tends to automatically download updates whenever
    one is available.

  5. The first thing to do is turn off Instant On if it is enabled. That way nothing will be getting downloaded while the console is off. Not system or game updates,

Now this will allow you a little more freedom. System updates are going to be required if you want to game online, as will obviously the game updates. However if you simply want to play the single player portion of a title, you can forgo both system and game
    updates and remain offline.

Get off capped internet and go with unlimited data allowance per month. My ISP Vodafone NZ does this. Unlimited data. 100mb/s download speed and 10mb/s upload speed. With this I can upload a 30 minute Full HD 1080p video to YouTube in only 15 minutes. I
saw the amount my place uses and it averages 400GB per month. I watch a tonne of YouTube and Netflix videos too (in 1080p). Vodafone is one of the biggest ISP's in the world. They should service your area. NZ is a small commonwealth country, yet they still
service here too. Surely they ought to service some wop wop town or area in like a country is large as the united states, or wherever you live. Otherwise why not put a request to Vodafone to run a network near you or something. We live in an online world
these days where the internet has become a necessity. It saves going to the library whenever it's open and wherever it is. Get unlimited internet. Vodafone NZ offers packages which are uncapped and they tend to be only like $10 or $20 more a month compared
with the caped. And if you get capped, if you go over that, they slow you speed to dial up or they charge you like $1 per GB for the rest of the month.

  7. One thing I looked at in setting was to disable automatic uploads of game clips and activities - it's on by default.

Game streaming also use a lot.

Netflix - wow, that is some data hog to look out for.

I have looked at Ubisoft games in particular having patches as large as full game downloads.

I uninstalled goth Division and Ghost Recon Wildlands because of this - that both have patches larger than 50% of game size in full.

I installed Steep yesterday, and game install was 16.7 GB, and patch update 14.5 GB - WTF is this.

Ubisoft seem to have a lazy approach to this stuff.

They do cumulative patch updates it seems - so every later patch also download everything for earlier disregarding what you have installed.

Division +30 GB install - day one patch over 16 GB to download.

Ghost Recon Wildlands - three updates in 5 months of over +8GB each - which is over 50% of game size - again WTF is this.

If he's only playing games like Destiny it could be that when he goes to play it, the game has massive updates, this could very easily push up the amount they are using.

    XBOX One data usage.

It would probably depend on the game. Dead Rising 3 and Titanfall both seem to be doing quite a bit on the server side so they might take up a decent chunk of your bandwidth.

Wow 15Gig data cap ouch. Digital BF4 plus premium DLC and patches is like 40Gigs. Some of the patches for other games like Dead Rising 3, Need for Speed Rivals, Call of Duty Ghosts are in the 200-600MB range. One thing extra you can do is disable voice in
games since VOIP stuff can consume quite a bit a bandwidth even more so in Party Chat since they upgraded codec for that which sounds great, but uses even more data. Just purely playing online doesn't consume all that much bandwidth though. Want to say Battlefield
4 with 64 players is probably around between 30kB/s-80kB/s and Call of Duty 16 players around 15kB/s-40kB/s with 1 kB/s being 3.6 MB/hr.

    -

Also I would disable the game DVR since it auto records and uploads some moments from games automatically. So if your upload is factored into your cap those clips are something you can do without.
