Xbox One crashes when starting a game from instant-on mode

I have my Xbox One set to instant-on mode. Usually, say I'm playing a game, and just turn off the console. When I restart my console later, I'm able to just pick up the game where I left off. For the past week or so, when I start a game this way, the screen
goes black for about 15 seconds, then the console shuts off. I can't restart it with the controller, only by pressing the power button on the console. It then goes through a full start up process. I've done a bit of experimenting--say I'm playing Skyrim when
I shut the xbox down. When I restart from instant-on mode, if I try to get back into Skyrim, the system will crash. But if I first start a different game, then start Skyrim, everything is fine. Or, I can start from instant-on, select Skyrim, select "quit,"
and then start the game, it works. It only happens when trying to resume a game that was active when the power was shut off. I've tried clearing the cache, didn't work. It's not a huge issue to work around, but it is annoying and if there is a fix I'd like
to know it. Thanks for any help!

Hello

Is your Xbox by any chance on Instant on ? If it is can you try to perform a
powercycle or change the
power mode from instant on to energy saving. This usually fixes things when apps freeze/crash.

 

Xbox one reliability

Have you tried a hard reset? leaving it in Instant-On mode for several days can cause games to randomly crash or not start.

 

Are you in the xbox insiders program? This could be a cause.

Also, can you turn your power settings to power savings mode, reboot and then turn it back to instant on, power down and unplug for 30 seconds, and see if that fixes it?

Also, what I'd do is a factory reset of your console, keeping games and apps (requires account redownload):

Settings > System > Console Info & Updates > Reset console > "keep games and apps".

 

Hey l Godpuncher l, Sounds like there might be something going on with the latest update to the console and the console would benefit from a

soft factory reset (while keeping games and apps). Make sure the info to the Microsoft accounts are known (email and password) since they will be kicked off the console. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes!

 

I tried a factory reset and I thought it worked at first... I started a game, shut down and restarted, and was able to jump back into the game. However, later I was in a game, and jumped into the youtube app for a couple of minutes, and when I went back
to my game, the same issue happened. Black screen for about 10-15 seconds, then power off. So now I can't even watch youtube without having to reboot my entire system after. Any other ideas?

 

Let’s Power Cycle the Console: Please unplug from the power supply for two minutes then try again.

Based on what you described, the power supply may have been corrupted in some way as the console is fully rebooting and powercycling on it's own once the power demands get too high, the OS will crash and cause the Xbox to shut down.

What version of Xbox One do you have? Original or the One S/or X?

Also since we are using Skyrim and YouTube as an example, do you happen to save those two in an external hard drive or in the internal hard drive?

Lastly, do you plug in the Xbox straight into the wall socket, or into a surge protector power strip?

It's an original Xbox One. I have an external drive, but its only for movies. All of my games/apps are on the internal drive. And yes, I use a power strip... is this not recommended?

Yea it is not recommended to use a surge protector/multi-plug.. If at all possible its best to plug directly into the wall. On original Xbox one there is a surge protector in the Power supply. On the Xbox one S & X there is an internal surge protector.

It's not recommended plugging into power strips/surge protectors simply because some of them may not be able to handle the electrical current draw the Xbox requires, especially during certain actions that require a lot of power, like starting up a game that
was "paused" from start-up with Instant-On Mode. The more devices you share with the Xbox on that same power strip can affect the power strip further and over time can cause corruption to the power supply. The power supply itself should have the current draw
on there and you'd have to confirm with the power strip that it can handle all of the power requirements it has to deal with.

The original Xbox has an external power unit so you may be able to replace it. Unfortunately they are not produced anymore, so you may need to look online for one or at your local game store.
