Xbox one controller not working as expected when wireless

I'm using Windows 10 with an Xbox One Controller. When I connect it with a USB cable it works as expected. I recently bought the wireless receiver, but when I use this the controller is not recognised as an Xbox controller. It shows up in device manager
as "XINPUT compatible HID device". When I try to use it on steam some buttons work, but I have to configure the buttons manually in each game.

I tried to "update driver" in device manager and select the xbox one controller, but that does not work. Will not let me select it.

Any idea how I can get the controller to work with wireless as it does with the cable?

Was it the official Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller? For the Xbox 360 wireless controller, an adapter is required. For Xbox One, the original Xbox One controller will only work when wired. For the One S controller, you can connect it via bluetooth.

Are all Xbox One Controllers going to be Wireless?

Yes, but also no.

Every Xbox One controller is wireless. However, when you plug it in via USB it becomes wired and sends the signal via wire instead of wireless (while also charging batteries, if you are using the charge-pack - or in the case of your question, it's using the power via cable instead of the batteries).

This is in contrast to how Xbox 360 controllers work. X360 has both wireless and wired. An X360 wireless controller when plugged in via USB is still sending the signal wireless, but is getting power via the USB. This is why you can't plug an Xbox 360 wireless controller via USB into your computer and have it work, because the controller is still sending a wireless signal.

This makes the Xbox One controllers great for both Xbox One and PC gaming, because you don't need to buy a 'wired' controller for it to work on the PC, you can just plug it in via USB and it'll send the signal via USB instead. I'm really glad Microsoft did this.

I had this problem, I fixed it by doing two things.

First I reinstalled all versions of Direct X. looking in the install folders of my games, I started with DX9 on up.

Then, I uninstalled the Xbox divice in Device manager. rebooted and things worked fine.

Xbox receiver should be under Networking devices. (WHY?? Microsoft smoking crack again)

^^Yep. A while before the Xbox One launch, MS was granted a patent on a wireless controller that turns into a wired one when connected with a cable.

When the Xbox One controller is connected to the console via a USB cable, the commands are sent through the cable, rather than through wireless, and you can test that by removing the batteries and you'll find it still works. So, the answer to your question
is almost certainly no, as there is no need for a separate wired controller as the one you already have already works as both a wired and wireless controller.
