    xbox one controller fast scroll

NOTE: everything written below is in the context of using the xbox one s console.

Actually, I'm not here to ask a question but rather to answer one that I've had and seen others asking in many places on the web.

I have a controller that moves across menu items very quickly - too quickly for me to be able to easily land on the one I want. Typically, a single click on one of the arrow buttons moves two spaces, but I get a little better control with the left joystick.

In looking for a fix I've seen other people blame this behavior on a "feature" that has come to be called "fast scroll" that supposedly is designed to make it quicker to scroll some menus with the left joystick. One is supposed to be able to turn this feature
on or off by holding down the right arrow button while pressing one of the "face" buttons (x,y,a, or b I believe). Doing this seemed to work on one occassion, but only after several tries. Then the problem returned, and again it eventually dissappeared after
fiddling some more, then it returned again.

I have not been able to find any reference to this "fast scroll" feature outside of these posts I have read claiming that the above sequence of button pushing will turn it off and have come to suspect that it is a myth.

What I have since discovered is that, in my case at least, the right joystick is somehow running interference with the arrow buttons and left joystick.

The first clue was that when I tried to use this controller to input a word using the onscreen keyboard, I couldn't move my selection more than a few spaces in any direction - the selection kept forcing me into the top left corner of the keyboard.

The second clue was that when I went to settings/devices and streaming/accessories and selected the beaker icon at the bottom of the screen to enter "test mode", in testing the buttons I discovered that when using the left joystick (indicated by the "L" in
the center of the button-pressed symbol that shows which button is being pressed), it would frequently register as "R" - the right joystick.

Once I saw this second clue, I simply moved the right joystick around a few times and then the left joystick and the arrow buttons started behaving normally again.

What's odd though is that it appears that the right joystick is supposed to be ignored during menu navigation, so why it should run interference with the operations of the other buttons isn't clear. However, for now, it seems that I have a way of correcting
my problem, though how long it will last is uncertain. Hopefully this information is useful to someone else too.

    :)

    Xbox one fast scroll

    Hi Power,

Thanks for coming to the forums with your issue. There currently is not a setting for fast scroll. Are you currently enrolled in the insider program? Try

    power cycle
your console, also update the controller.

    Thanks,

    Brad

Disabling “Fast scrolling” on a controller

    Hello, and thanks for replying!

-I’m using an Xbox one S

-I’m using an Xbox Series S/X controller

-Yes I’m using this controller wirelessly

-I’ve tried resetting my console, re-syncing the controller, updating the controller and more.

-I do not have any external devices connected to my console other than the power supply

There’s a possible chance that this issue could be caused by stick drift, because when I go to the configuration and testing section of the Xbox accessories app in settings, it shows that the left control stick is being pressed even though I’m not actually pressing down on it, however I’m not entirely sure how that ties in with the whole menu browsing being fast since if I leave my controller idle it doesn’t move automatically like having stick drift would.

I’m considering opening up the controller to see if there is anything major or obvious that’s wrong with it because from the exterior there doesn’t appear to be. But if you don’t recommend me doing that then please let me know.

Thanks again for this as I haven’t had much luck elsewhere!

Disabling “Fast scrolling” on a controller

Hi, codzilla584! thank you for your reply.

That means your controller's problem may be hardware-related after all.

Would you mind giving this a try?

    - Press and hold your controller's Xbox button until it shuts down.

    - Remove your controller's batteries and the Micro-USB cable (if plugged in) for a minute or two.

    - Press and hold your console's power button until it shuts down.

    - Remove all external devices from the console's USB ports.

    - Unplug your console's power cord for 5 minutes.

    - Plug the power cord back in, and make sure to use one of the wall's outlets.

    - Turn your console on and check if the issues persist.

    Best regards.

Disabling “Fast scrolling” on a controller

Hi, codzilla584! thank you for your reply.

Is this also happening with your other controller? or is it isolated to your current one? knowing this would help us determine the source of the issue.

    Best regards.
