What I can recommend you to do is wait for a promotion at certain times of the year, accessories and consoles are on sale at official Microsoft stores, and also at partner stores, you can get an Xbox controller at a great price at those times. Or, If the controller might have been bricked and you have an Xbox One, you can try this method that has worked for some people including me:

- Power down the Xbox One by holding the power-button down for 7 seconds (Until it powers off)

- Unplug the Xbox One power-brick from the wall for 5 minutes, to be sure there everything is 100% discharged.

- Plug the controller into one of the Xbox One USB ports. (preferably one of the back USB ports). Make sure nothing else is plugged in.

- Try to turn on the Xbox using the controller's button. If it doesn't work, turn on the Xbox One using the console's power button.

- While the Xbox One is booting up, try to turn on the controller by pressing the controller's Xbox button. (I tried about every 2 seconds)

The controller turned on after I hit the Xbox button the 3rd time for me while the console was booting up. If it turns on and works, head to the Xbox Accessories app on the console and it should be on the latest controller firmware.
