I have 8 rechargeable batteries, I have wto in my controller, two next to my console, and 4 in the charger.

you want the higher powered ones, they last longer, but are a little more expensive.

I also recommend getting a micro usb cable for emergencies (and updates)

My wife got me this ( £9.99 in UK )

Comes with 4 rechargeable AA batteries. Takes around 6 hours to fully charge but I can get 2-3 days use out of 1 set.

3. Rechargeable batteries are cool and all but swapping them out becomes tedious.

The play and charge kit is just so much better. I've gone days without recharging it and you can plug the controller into a phone charger to juice it back up or it can be recharged while the console is asleep.

I plug the play and charge cable into my phone charger so I don't have a cord going across my living room.
Microsoft says "standard rechargeable batteries" are not recommended.
I use the same AA batteries in my Xbox One controller that I use in my 360 controller. They're all NiMH. Some are low discharge cells from Sanyo and Sony,
some are the ones I ripped out of a "dead" 360 P&C pack.

They may have mentioned "standard" rechargeable batteries to cover themselves against short battery life with low capacity NiCads or fast discharge NiMH. Buy a charger that comes with four low-discharge NiMH AA cells and be happy. Something like

this
would be fine.

I use standard rechargeables too. I have Energizer NiMH batteries and I cannot imagine any reason MS would say not to use them other than "Don't use rechargeables, buy our play 'n charge kit!". But I have used these for years and I love them. Just keep a
charged set on the table and when it's time, its a 5 second switch. I still wish it didn't take 10 seconds from when you push the power button to when you can play again. It takes the controller longer to reconnect than it does to switch the batteries!

10. To add a little battery life perspective for the P&C kit... I charged to full before Titanfall launched. I played about 8 hours a day for the 3 days after launch and still had some charge left for some mid-week gaming. I think I charged it on Sunday (which
is 10 days after release) and now it's still holding up, probably will until next weekend.

I just find it surprising that Microsoft seems to be lying about what batteries we can use. They don't recommend 'standard' rechargeables - then why does PDP/Energizer sell them as a licensed product? What might happen if I use regular NiMh cells? I'm
sure the P&C kit works great. I started with that on the 360 - and then hey gotta stop playing cuz of low battery. Lame. The QuickCharge kit made it very easy. Dunno why they don't have that.
I just find it surprising that Microsoft seems to be lying about what batteries we can use.
They're not lying, they're covering themselves. I own 2500mAh rechargeable batteries that, just by sitting on a shelf, will discharge
in less than two weeks. That's what they're covering themselves against, people who claim the controller is bad on batteries when in fact it's the batteries that are awful.

I use rechargables. I have 4 so I can play while the other 2 are charging. They give me a good amount of play time too.

My only concern with the NiMh AAs is that Microsoft says not to use them, but not why. (Although I think they approved them in the "licensed" Energizer product. I might just do the Play and Charge, but I do wish there was an external charger for it. (Then
again, it makes it no different from the Sony controllers.)
