    Xbox one Console suddenly not seeing External drives, even brand new backup console.


    I'm having a weird issue with external drives used in media mode.

    I keep an external HDD hooked up to my Xbox to watch movies and listen to music. But today the Xbox has stopped seeing the drive when i open the Media player App. Worked fine yesterday.

    Did a hard reset, nada.

    Uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Nada

    Completely reset console and set everything back up, downloaded app. Nada

    Re Formatted multiple drives in NTFS, fat32 and exfat. nada.

    after formatting I get the popup on the console asking if I want to use It for media or format for game storage, so the console sees the physical drive, just not any partitions on it.

    So, I then did a Complete data wipe on the drive (Zeroed). Reformatted, Nada

    Tried all the following drives and adapters in all usb ports.

    Tried other 3.5 drives in two different external hot swap bays.

    4tb. WD gold enterprise. Nada.

    Toshiba x300 5tb. nada

    Brand new Seagate 6tb iron wolf. Nada

    Old seagate 750gb worked ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

    Also tried

    3tb Wd passport external drive. nada.

    Old Seagate 500gb external. Worked ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

    Toshiba canvio 5tb, nada.

    Another Samsung 2tb external, nada

    All usb flash drives of any size read fine.

    Even tried multiple other drive bays, hdd enclosures and SATAto usb adaptors.

    All above hdds work perfectly Hooked to my pc in every configuration.

    And out of total frustration I even unboxed a brand new backup console that I had in the closet, did first time setup, updated and same thing. Everything identical to other console.

    All these drives, sata to usb adapters and HDD bays I've had hooked to the console in the past and one as recently as yesterday. Only the smaller drives show in the media player app.

    I'm at a complete loss. This has to be a software issue on the console that changed over night or something.

    Nothing about a fix at the moment but if anyone is in the preview program try leaving it and see if that helps.

    If you have a play and charge kit, check to see if it is charging properly, and anyone else here, if you haven't updated your controllers firmware DO NOT UPDATE IT.

    I have the same issues as several other users who have posted.

    Post the Septermber 27th update my whole console (One S) was problematic. The OS was slow and apps (even system related ones) were either unresponsive or throwing up errors. There was also an issue with the TV tuner not being recognised.

    I was forced to try a reset on the console. This resolved the OS and app issues.

    HOWEVER, the previously working 4tb WD Eelements drive I use for media was not recognised AFTER I had selected to use the drive as MEDIA. Note I tried ALL of the troubleshooting tips on the xbox assist site so PLEASE DO NOT REPLY AND SUGGEST I TRY THEM - THEY DID NOT WORK. The ONLY way the drive can be recognised by the consoile is if I select to use the drive for game and app storage.

    The drive itself is fine. It obviously (because it was working before) meets all the requirements for xbox. I can plug it into the PC and format it / copy to it / copy from it / play media from it.

    If I use a small (2gb for example) that is NOT USB 3.0 I can play media files from it.

    I can't get hold of anyone in Microsoft using the virtual assistant, as has been reported in other threads.

    The ONLY variable has been the update - which also looks to be what borked the OS until I reset the console. I suggest that this is a software fault.

    The more i am reading about these recent controller and system updates, the more i suspect this is a voltage issue caused by the updates with regards to powering devices via USB.

    Hence why some peoples play and charge packs aren't charging and USB HDD's for media aren't functioning properly.
